DONT adjust the chain while on the sidestand

as i found out today DONT adjust the chain while on (paddoc)stands or on sidestand!
bike needs to be in gear AND you need to be sitting on it!!

i did as the manual said… ie. neutral and sidestand and overtightened it! and now theres a bad sound from the front sprocket :crying: need to go out at lunch and loosen before i ride home and do more damage! :pinch:

Didn’t you notice when you pulled off, of after you tightened it?

You can use the ‘facets’ on the tightening nuts as a gauge. Works for me!

i noticed half way to work when the noise started :crying:

That’s just a hornet sound. It happens to them all when they get to a certain age… :hehe:

well been injecting some bottox into it so it should be like new…

You can inject some scada into it too! :hehe:

thats strictly an aprillia accessory!!: P

Hmmn well a more realistic way would be to do it right once and then take note of the slack in the chain when you put it on a side stand. My manual specifies the slack you can measure from the swingarm by pulling the chain. Obviously sprocket dependant.

very good advice

The fact you overtightened it has nothing to do with it being on the sidestand in neutral - it’s because you overtightened it !

Most manuals (proper service manuals, not Haynes) give the correct amount of free play at the tightest part of the chain - use this info and you’ll be fine

a loud exhaust will fix the noise problem:D

after you adjust the chain, sit on the bike and check it isn’t too tight??

Do you think bike shops use two guys to check the chain adjustment? I suspect not.

Like gurninman says, you got it wrong.

O.k. If you have bizarre/trick rear suspension geometry, the margin of error might increase but mostly it’s down to the man with the spanners.

Pinching up the axle nut will always tighten the chain that little bit more.

As has been said, find the tight spot on the chain adjust to the correct tension + about 1cm of extra play then tighten the axel nut and check again.
