Oh, Tony, I didn’t think for a moment it was genuine! Normally when you get these, they at least look genuine, with company/bank logos, etc, but this one really takes the biscuit, there’s no way anybody would think this was genuine!
Anything that comes through like that either phone or Email the compny concerned, no company should ask you any details via Email or by phone.
Even when I forget or cant get to the bank to pay my credit card i wont give the company my details would rather lose the card for a few days than give out my details to someone I cant see.
Pishing , as it’s called, emails are prolific at the moment, you really can’t afford to believe anything you get in your inbox. I’m lucky in that I control my domain, so I can specify any number of email addresses, so I give unique ones to each of my online partners, meaning if I get an email puporting to be from paypal, on one of my generic addresses, I know it’s fake, and ignore it.
For everyone else, you should always assume it’s fake, and go directly to the site, via your browser and bookmarks, not via any links in the emails, as these can be cleverly (or not so in many cases) made up to look like the real thing.
You’d be surprised … I work for an ISP and a good few of our customers have fallen for worse! There are many scams out there for poaching domain names. The most infamous scammed domain was the sex.com domain, where the domain was poached by falsifying letters to Verisign I believe. That took an awfully long time to be sorted by the courts.
