Do you replace your helmet as a matter of course?

I guess I’m over due a change now as I’ve got to be almost 5-6 years on two lids! Even if no drops or spills, how often do you change your lid?

I mean, we cant trust the manufacturers as they just want the turnover, right?

AGV - "It is recommended you replace your helmet 7 years after date of manufacture and 5 years after date of purchase to maintain the maximum levels of protection "http://support.agv.co.uk/support/solutions/articles/5000626659-how-do-i-know-when-my-helmet-is-past-its-best-

Shoei - “Even if none of these is applied, we, SHOEI, recommend replacement in 5 years after it’s first purchased at retail” http://www.shoei-helmets.com/Maintenance.aspx

Schuberth - 5 year warranty http://www.schuberth.com/en/products/motorbikes/warranty-registration.html

From http://www.helmetcheck.org/safetytips.aspx - “Most helmet manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every two to four years. If you notice any signs of damage before then, replace it sooner.”

Sharp - "A motorcycle helmet generally has a life of around five years; three years if used regularly. " http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/content/helmet-care

Play safe.

Every two years I replace mine
I sopose it all depends on how much use it gets

Yeah I would at 5 years! Why risk it when there are fairly cheap well rated helmets?

Every 3 years from date of purchase for me or sooner if anything happens to it obviously.

Halfords do some really cheap ones so why not every month still cheaper than dogs danglies top of range ones

Every four years for me, except when I broke one

Every 3 years from date of purchase for me or sooner if anything happens to it obviously. Marmablade

Based on previous experience, or just as a precaution?

One of those was a small fortune. But I’ve got my wear out of it. The halfords lid has good ratings! But I like a bit of color. This next I think.

My experience is 4 years is enough if you use it a lot. It takes on a smell that won’t go away even if you wash the lining. Though maybe that’s just me

I have two identical helmets I purchased in 2010. One had been used regularly, the other just sat on the shelf in its bag. The shelf item seems fine, the used helmet has developed some flex in the shell and is clearly breaking down.

The time scale is due to precautions and if anything happens to it then that is due to safety

I personally don’t think the industry needs money that bad they need to lie about lifespans of lids. Its a multi billion pound industry world wide, so if they say they have a lifespan then I would tend to believe them

I know what you mean… I’ve retired my Daijiro Kato helmet but can’t bring myself to throw it away. I feel like a hoarder!

What´s the logic if changing it if the the helmet as seen no damage? I can´t see how a piece of plastic can have an expiration date

I suggest you guys give your old helmets away to the Fire Brigade or London Ambulance Service, so that they can practice the stuff that may the life another biker.

Apparently the outer shell is gradually weakened by UV rays. The inner polystyrene gradually compresses through wear & tear & can soften due to the sweat/oils/hair products picked up from the scalp of the wearer.

I see... but you need UV rays for that... XD!

The outer shell gets more brittle as time goes on, and the only time you’d know about it not working is when it’s too late.

Every 3 years. I ride most days, so general wear and tear dictates an earlier replacement.

Like it, never thought of it.
