From http://www.helmetcheck.org/safetytips.aspx - “Most helmet manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every two to four years. If you notice any signs of damage before then, replace it sooner.”
My experience is 4 years is enough if you use it a lot. It takes on a smell that won’t go away even if you wash the lining. Though maybe that’s just me
I have two identical helmets I purchased in 2010. One had been used regularly, the other just sat on the shelf in its bag. The shelf item seems fine, the used helmet has developed some flex in the shell and is clearly breaking down.
The time scale is due to precautions and if anything happens to it then that is due to safety
I personally don’t think the industry needs money that bad they need to lie about lifespans of lids. Its a multi billion pound industry world wide, so if they say they have a lifespan then I would tend to believe them
I suggest you guys give your old helmets away to the Fire Brigade or London Ambulance Service, so that they can practice the stuff that may the life another biker.
Apparently the outer shell is gradually weakened by UV rays. The inner polystyrene gradually compresses through wear & tear & can soften due to the sweat/oils/hair products picked up from the scalp of the wearer.
