Fools, i hear your pain. its a hard job as it is filtering traffic, no need to make it harder by fair weather riders pretending to know how to behave on the roads.
those are the times when i actually miss the bad weather!
by the way, do you work for dhl?
those couriers are way slow, makes me wonder
This thread is LOL.
I used to mostly enjoy the odd ‘race’ with commuters, was fun specially if they were on a sportsbike and got left by CBF500
the only thing i got annoyed with is others holding me up but knowing they were doing so…
scooters were prone to it, BUT i would’nt barge straight past or try and go round them without them knwing i was there, i’d give them a little ‘time’ to move, many did some didnt, not much i could do so no real point getting annoyed, just one of those things.
as an ex-courier if i am out riding aand a courier does come up behind me filtering etc, i move over and wave em through, cos i know they are on the clock…i’m not:)
anyway i’m not as brave or unhinged as i was, well…sometimes:w00t:
what’s your source for that ‘fact’?
got to say i’m pretty comfy filtering in london traffic, and my speed depends on mood, weather and how late I’m running, but i do think its important to keep an eye in the mirror and if i see a quick courier coming up behind me i always move over, i think its just common sense more than anything else.
some couriers these days are on 125’s etc and don’t think they do you to many favours, i was pretty pissed off in earls court when one didn’t move forward a bit and left me and 2 other bikes wedged in. I do think all couriers who are essentially professional riders should have there full licence, just a thought.
But in general i say, if its coming up faster than you move over when theres a gap and let them through.
This is totally incorrect, these boxes are enforced, if you cross the first line essentially it is the same as running a red light, points and a fine. I suggest you read your highway code. If you get a tug and tell the policeman there was oil/gravel or another hazard do you think he/she won’t just walk over and check. I said in my initial post that I stop at the first line when possible, If it puts other riders at risk then I will allow space for them to progress in front of the cars, we all know it is safer in front of them. To then rip off from the lights only to hold me up , this is not cool. I show respect and only ask for a little in return, what is the hardship in that.
For everyone’s information I am not a Courier although I was for a few years.
I am aware there are some good riders around, it is usually easy to tell. They tend to be measured and not rushed, their riding style is smooth and controlled and they are aware of everything around them.
What got me going the other day was a guy deliberately racing off the lights, taking a Marquez line cutting back in front and generally riding like a total dick. His actions put me at risk. If this happens 3-4 times a day it becomes boring.
For me wherever you work is the equivalent of your office, for a Farmer it is his land, a trader their desk and for me it is my Motorcycle. Is it to much to ask from a fellow motorcyclist for a bit of respect and understanding that I am putting food on the table and just going about my business. If it is then you must not really be a biker, or even a decent human being.
Go out and get 13 winters under your belt 20,000 + miles a year through all conditions and then look at what I am saying. If you do and you get on your bike and don’t get miffed when Mr Fairweather with his chicken striped qualifiers, barely creased leathers and pristine boots thinks he can have a go then you are a saint.
This thread is funny and it is interesting to hear what people believe to be their rights (me included) and also what is good practice.
+1
I commute all year round whatever the weather. and getting caught behind a slow moving knobber who wont move the f over gets on my tits. if i get someone who looks like there able to move through traffic easier and faster than i can il move over no problem… riding a lardy blade through traffic has its downsides… i miss my cb500 ![]()
@Fooligan55 - Strange. Bikesafe coppers told me they weren’t enforced but they did also say that it is technically the same as jumping a red light as you mentioned.
Also, like you, I use it when I need to. When there are bikes behind me I’m courteous enough to edge forward to give them the opportunity to not be sandwiched or be facing oncoming traffic. Just polite if you ask me.
But I do believe that people who use the road for work shouldn’t have more priority than me (or anyone else) on the road.
Bikesafe coppers told me - they aren’t enforced by the police in London - that it was the councils who did (or didn’t) enforce them.
He reckoned they might start once they worked out it was an easy few quid (like bus lane fines)
I think about this thread.
I don’t care who you are or what status you believe you hold. You are no more equal than me or any other. I will deal with you in the manner to which your actions have negated. If you show myself and others a mutual respect, it will be returned in spades. If you display malice or contempt… you will recieve it back, like wise.
Couriers are much quicker than mere mortals? lol Maybe 20 years ago. A load of Brazilians wobbling around on 125s in no rush as they’ll just have to drink tea for hours waiting for the next job does not make me think ‘awesome’ and instantly surrender my roadspace to the mighty courier.
Hahahaha hahahaha I hear that, luckily I left the despatch game in 2000.
In fact I can’t remember the last time I saw a courier on a mission in traffic. I moved to London in 1999 and used to see a fair few insane couriers back then. The internet has shrank their market size considerably.
Last year I saw a guy couriering a CX500. **** knows where he dug that up from. I thought they’d all been ran into the ground years ago.
Ahhh the joy of CX!
I rode everything from CG125’s to ST1100 Pan Euro’s. My favourite despatch weapon was my 99 GSXR600 with Stage 1 jetting and full system Akroprovic. Rapid, nimble and the best laugh to charge about on, sadly not the most economical bike to run. 44,000 miles in 2 years and never a problem, happy days
^^ Wow… I hope you had bar risers on it too with a padded seat!
Me, I just ride my ride and let people get on with theirs. I am courteous and move over where safe for me to do so, but don’t go into the the cycle box as that is for cycles, not motorcycles. Been told off by city plod and warned that it would be points + fine. No point pushing my luck. There are silly tit riders out there, I watched a fellow on a ped last week try to kill himself, pity he failed. he nearly took out other people. Time will tell.
