DIY questoin

ok,

I need to put the show on the wall, i need to drill through the tiles so 2 questions.

Whats the best way to go about it (in that I mean best way to not crack the tiles)

and what is the best drill bit, I have tried the ones I’ve got but no join, one is a masonary one (thought I’d give it a go but would have been bettr off using a fork). and I have some good multipurpose ones but they aint cutting the mustard either.

so any ideas?

Look in Yellow Pages under handyman?

" ways - Either buy a purpose made tile drill bit - or, if you have a really good masonry drill make a cross using insulating/electrical tape - centre of the cross being where you want to drill - the tape will stop it slipping - but really, you’re better off with the right dril bit…

Get a decent masonary bit from a tool Hire Shop, not one of them cheap sets from homebase.

A bit of masking tape on the tile will stop the drill slipping and don’t be tempted to use Hammer Action on your drill:w00t:

Do you mean shower ? You’re going to need a proper tile drill-bit. You could do it with a masonry one, but if you balls it up, you’ll end up having to replace the tile(s).

Put a couple of layers of tape on the tile, so it doesn’t slip and skid across half a dozen tiles or through your hand.

should hope not the drill bit I was using cost me £10 so better be the dogs or I want my money back…after buying one of those 350’000 drill bits for 3p from argos and breaks after drilling one whole I now realise you may as well get the good ones they will last much longer…

I’d definitely use masking tape rather than insulationg tape, will make it easier.

Also it is easier to drill through the grouting than the tile, so if it lines up with the grouting instead, then that is easier than drilling through tile.

Agree with the others, either a good masonry bit, or tile bit

If the tile is porcelain, a masonry drill bit will butcher it - a tile shop will sell you the right bit (they look quite different to normal drill bits, a lot smoother & diamond tipped). If the tiles are ceramic or marble then a good masonry will be fine - you could also try drilling a smaller one first, then move to a larger bit (easier to control)

Porcelain?? Marble???

You’re obviously not up to speed with the grief Sleeper had with his gaff;)

you would think wouldn’t you but the boss has spoken and although if on the grout it will only be like .5 to 1" out she demands it go on the tile.

Use a very thin drill bit to drill a pilot hole for the larger bit. Masking tape to stop it slipping. I did this a couple of months ago… Worked fine for me.

Masonary bit, drill on the non hammer function, masking tape where the hole need to be to stop the bit slipping!!!

You get special drill bits for drilling tiles, b&Q wickes etc will sell them - dont use a massonary bit, they are only a couple of quid.

The tile drill bit is shapped like a spear head…

just so everyone knows I tried a masonary bit and it was like trying to break the berlin wall with a spoon usless!!!

I’ve come in late on this one but would highly recommend you get a good quality tile drill bit – I’ve screwed up too many tiles with masonry bits. No hammer on your drill and go very, very gently.

Good luck! If you break a tile I’ll expect to see your “single chap looking for a place to live” advert under classifieds! :stuck_out_tongue:

lol thanks for the vote of confidence.

But not to worry she only has to look at the huge gaping holes she has left around the house through her misadventures with power tools…

I now lock them away so she cannot get to them while I’m at work.

This is the best method, and use a variable speed drill to get started then use slightly larger bits till you get to size you want, its a bit long winded but works everytime

Blimey - all this talking and you could have done it by now! :w00t:
