The girlfriend doesnt seem to get on the back of the Hornet unless I have a topbox on it :ermm:. she was obviously spoiled by the CBF that had a givi monokey.
anyway, when i traded the CBF in i kept the topbox but not the givi plate or the bars (that wouldnt fit the Hornet anyway).
I looked around abit and was thinking of getting the motech rack with the adaptor but it was pricey (£150+ for both) and the givi bars look well ugly !
So after some beers and contemplation came up with a DIY idea. :Whistling:
Buy a rentec rack that are cheap and a Givi plate and join the two
So managed to find a rack from a memeber of Hornets Nest (UK) and a givi (Kapa actually) plate from ebay (£45 for both)
Then got some bolts and some piecies of metal from a Hardware store and tried to put the two together…
unfortunately because of the way the plate is made it didnt sit on the rack properly … had to grind it down (to create a flat surface).
Once that was done, the plate was nicely places on the rack and securly bolted on!
total cost :smooooth: under £50 (a third of the motech price! )
will post pics if poeple want me to
Well done! Nice solution.
oh go on then pan, let’s see those pics:D
right here are some pics - note that i dont have many tools - just a simple drill (that i then converted to a grinder) and some spanners.
first off here is what i started with :
a renntec rack

and a givi plate

and then i put the two together as i explained above

here is a pic from the side

Here you can see how i screwed the two together. I had to get the two brown metal bits from B&Q.

also the 3rd screw (left to right) is there to ensure that the plate doesnt move back. but dont think it needs it as it is pretty secure

So now the important bit!! what does it look on the bike??
here is the tail naked!

and here with the rack+plate on

from the side

and finally with the topbox on it

I know it could look abit better, I could have grinded the plate better and i could trim the bolts down abit, but like I said I dont have that many tools in my disposal. :doze:
good job, with the tools involved.
I got lucky and found motech rack for the SV on ebay. Had to buy the plate for it so about 75 quid all said and done, but sure beats 150 brand new. by 50%ish anyways
Nice one!
Such a sense of accomplishment when you do it yourself and it works! Well done Pan.
Looks fine.
Just remember to do something to avoid corrosion of the nut & bolts that look so shiny
Does this persuade the GF to go pillion now?
yep!! she even almost fell asleep the other night on the way back from Wokingham
