Makes it look like a piece of piss !!  :-)

Stage 4 update

Sounds like Sam Sunderland’s bad but will be fine - rode off the edge of something so ended up dropping pretty far and compressing his back. Rode on for 5K more before losing the feeling in his legs and calling in an ambulance.

With him out and Toby Price not really on top form yet, KTM are looking a bit less dominant than normal…

  1. Adrien van Beveren (Yamaha) 11hr 3min 23sec

  2. Pablo Quintanilla (Husqvarna) +1min 55sec

  3. Kevin Benavides (Honda) +3min 15sec

  4. Matthias Walkner (KTM) +5min 23sec

  5. Xavier de Soultrait (Yamaha) +7min 34sec

  6. Toby Price (KTM) +10min 14sec

7 Jose Ignacio Cornejo (Honda) +12min 6sec

  1. Franco Caimi (Yamaha) +12min 48sec

  2. Gerard Farres (KTM) +13min 5sec

  3. Antoine Meo (KTM) +13min 47sec

Absolutely brutal edition…

How does it work with Dakar? Can anyone just apply and have a go (not that I’m planning to!) or do you have to be represented by a factory? They keep mentionining “Yamaha team”, “KTM team”, etc. hence curious.

On a side note - it looks crazy! The distances they have to cover and the physical endurance they must have to be able to do that is mental. Would love to be one of them and put myself to a test.

Short answer is yes, as long as you can pay the inscription fee and the massive logistics involved you can sign up by yourself. You will thought need a LOT of money or time to organise yourself. That's why some call them the race for big fat millionaires with nothing else to do. The other option is to be a VERY good rider and become part of a team.

A 450cc Dakar spec bike starts around €27,000 brand new.

it’s the map reading that’d do me in
