Picking up my new D.I.D chain and stealth sprockets today! Gone for a 15/42 setup… just as well the WP damper is being fitted at the weekend!!
Very nice looking sprocket Floyd. Aluminium center for weight reduction and a steel tooth ring for durability, hey? I would like a similar setup myself, but in black. What sort of gearing change is this over stock, i.e. -1 front +1 rear? 520 format chain?
Yeah… I got a couple of prilly mates that really dig the stealth stuff and as expensive as the D.I.D chains are over others like afam, regina etc the big twin eats those chains so you might as well pay the extra and get teh best chain. This chain is a 525
The gearing will be -1 on the front and +2 on the back… I’ll let you know how it goes once the front wheel touches down again!
That’s pretty wild gearing. I took a friends '02 750 out the other week and that had -1 +3 and would just wheelie in the first three gears on the throttle, it was SUCH a hoot to ride, completely bonkers. I was thinking of experimenting with -1 +2 myself, so let us know what it’s like
I run an AFAM 520 chain with Renthal sprockets on mine and there’s been no obvious signs of wear, very happy with them. The coloured option cost more though, hehe.
Well hopefully the D.I.D chain will wear abit better than the cheaper ones… the pulses from a twin really test the make up of the chain… its 525… which seems pretty standard on the prilly race bikes… but a few go for 520
Heres a question though… what kinda prep do you need to do for a decent ‘X’ ring chain? Genereally they dont need lubing that much do they?
In my experience you just keep them clean and a small bit of lube at the same time. There’s no need for the chain to be dripping, or looking bone dry, just a light gloss look. I normally clean mine off with WD40 once a week and reapply the lube whilst the chain’s still warm. This allows the excess lube to evaporate and mean less flick-up goes on your wheels. I give a wipe down after the first ride as well to keep it all looking nice.
yea… i know what your sayin jay…
dont be too hard on the chain lube… i did it once… and the bike paid for it… i was cleaning it ever 10 miles!!
Wahooo… finally get me chain and sprockets sorted tomorrow!! I’ll let you know how I like 15/42 tomorrow night!
Installation pictures please Floyd!
The K4 750 didn’t have a 520 as standard, that was a conversion I did. I believe, though am not 100% sure, that it was a 525, as standard. The K5 1000 has a 530 as standard. I will speak to Crescent and see what they say, either a 520 or 525 will go on in time. I don’t keep the bikes long enough to eat a chain, so no worries on that front.
Whats the lube of choice these days? Keep your answers clean ladies! This is a serious question for a change
Ive been using Silolene Titanium Chain gel which leaves a white competition look stuff on the chain. But im feelin that i prefer that immaculate clean lookin’ chain. As cool tho this stuff is. It looks like someones snotted on it!
Plus since my off at Silverstone and resulting replacment parts im quite fancing a nice yellow chain. Where would i be lookin’ for that?
Ok…you can do your lube jokes now
