crashbobbins

Hi Guys

What is your view on crash bobbins? I’ve had mix reviews so would like to hear what you think

thx

R&Gs are supposed to be pretty good. Cheap ones apparently shear off and do more harm than good.

I heard they do more harm than good, do you use them??

I don’t understand people who don’t use them. Good quality bobbins can save you a headache. It’s come in handy once, I was just pushing my motorbike into my garage and lost my footing causing the bike to slowly fall on its side, landed on the bobbin and saved me £100 to replace my belly-pan which would have certainly snapped off. When you have sports bikes with full fairings its not £100 worth of plastics, its £400+.

Get them. Make sure you get high tensile bolts

I’m just wondering why you think they may do more harm than good? Is it because you think the bobbins could dig into the ground and cause the bike to flip and cartwheel? Its possible but only on grass, if you are riding on tarmac then its not really an issue.

If you think it will dig into the tarmac and flip up then you are probably going too fast anyway and nothing would save your bike.

I think if they are cheap and shear off then they can damage the fairing while they are in the process of shearing off so you’ll end up with a cracked fairing instead of a scratched one. Proper ones can save you a lot of cash. I’ve seen people drop their bikes in carparks and picked them up with only damage to the crash bungs.

get some R&G’s mate they are reasonably priced and will save ur bike from low speed drops

ok cool, wheres a good place to buy the r&G ones from? or do i just google it?

Its a catch 22. I’d rather crack/scratch a fairing than crack something like a frame or whatever that crash bung is bolted to. Having said that I do like the way they look and at low speed collisions they do work.

I’ve dropped my bike and come off it at 45mph. Result was bent bar end (£10 to replace) and snapped clutch leaver (£5). The thing I can’t get hold of is the engine casing I scratched but I have seen them go for £30-40. There was no fairing damage. I’ve suffered more fairing damage parked in central london. Also, go on eBay and you will find a used fairing is most prob 1/2 the price as crash bungs. Well for my bike it is anyway. Puig crash bungs are £160ish and R&Gs are £198. Not including P&P.

twice I used them, they fit into the engine mounts on my bike, my first crash they screwed up the thread and I couldn’t use the original bolts any more, also the fairings cracked around the mounting point, this was a sliding crash
Second crash they cracked the faring around them again, this was a meeting with a car 3 days ago >.<

Pretty good if your naff at Uturns though

I found them pretty useless for anything else though

Don’t bother with the cheap copies, just get R & G’s, if you do drop it and need replacements, R&G do ‘half kits’ - They are one of the first mod’s I do when I get a new bike.
