Cost effective petrol tank repairer (dent and paintwork)?

Poor old Kermit has been in the wars again!

Had him parked in a motorcycle bay - came back to find a wing mirror badly bent (but they’re designed to move a fair distance, so didn’t think anything of it until I saw the end of my gear lever missing and then to my dismay a dented petrol tank with paint flaking off :crying: Caused by the bar end nudging into when he went down. Really annoyed, it’s one thing when you damage your own bike, you take it on the chin and get out your VISA, someone else does it whilst your present and the insurance sorts it out. But in this case I didn’t do anything, yet I’ll have to pay :pinch:

A few pics:

After putting almost 9,000 miles on him in 4 months (total of about 15,000 miles), he’s not worth a great deal now. Will be getting something bigger and better in due course, so he will be my local run-around/ commuter. Don’t have any plans to sell him, but want him to still look good and be well maintained. Guess what I’m hoping for is a half-way house that reflects his value. A job that is good enough, but if you got out the magnifying glass you could see the paint wasn’t a perfect match. Or is the only option to have it done to show-room standards? Just resent potentially paying a tenth of the value of the bike to fix such a small dent that I didn’t even create!

He deserves to look nice and with paint missing he’ll start rusting if I don’t address it promptly. Ideas, advice and recommendations about how to restore him greatly appreciated.

What’s your budget. I have options

I’d clear coat the damage and not worry about it, because if it happens again… well that would be annoying!

Cheap option with added protection just in case there’s a next time.

eeek not good :frowning: have you checked ebay for another tank ?

If you’re sure you could cope with ‘engaging with me’

Just tried to call, but just rang and didn’t go through to a voicemail. Will try again later.

tbh, I’d go with the ebay then baglux route rather than repair.

Not keen on the leather clad look and only about £50 cheaper than full repair (from first quote). Plus wouldn’t necessarily prevent it from getting dented again.

Found a 2nd hand tank on flea bay, but with fitting would come in at over £200.

It would appear that my hope of the dent being ‘sucked out’, a bit of sand paper and a bit of paint blending isn’t going to cut it! :frowning:

I would leave it… but then again I did ride with a large part of my bike covered in duct tape for over 2 years…

Think I have found a solution I will be happy with. Thanks for the input, will let you know how it goes.

Quick Q I know they are called tank slappers, but are the bar ends actually meant to be able to hit the tank before full lock? Maybe something else is bent…

No they’re not & it’s an MOT fail if they do. So probably a bent bar, or if you’re unlucky, a damaged lock-stop.

Jeez that’s sh¡t - always my fear when I come back to the bike bay.

More likely the bars have twisted in the yoke surely? Will just need re-setting if so.

How did we come to the conslusion that the bar enbd caused the damage? Did I miss something? More liley that it was knocked over and hit something or another bike!

In her original post Ally states that the damage was caused by the bar end. So one assumes that she noticed an alignment between the damage & the bar end when she checked the bike over afterwards?
