Computer shop

I need to know if anyone here works in a computer shop as i need a new external hard drive.

PC world are doing a good deal 1TB for 70 quid I think.

either that or www.overclockers.co.uk are a good bunch and have good prices.

If you know what you want then ebuyer is good and so is dabs

Im thinking on getting a Seagate or Western. Id rather not buy from PC world as they are crap if anything goes wrong, also i`d like to talk to someone who knows what they are talking about.

What you doing on here then John?!? :stuck_out_tongue:

+1, you could also try Novatech, I’ve bought quite a bit from them in the past, good prices and fast mail order delivery.

haha :stuck_out_tongue:

I thought as there are sooooooooooooooooooooo many members on LB that someone must work in a computer shop.

I use ebuyer for all of my computer kit.

How big do you want the drive to be space wise and physical size?

Looking for about 500GB and above, i`ve got a mate who is looking into for me.

Not a computer shop but we sell satellite systems and use a few external hard drives…what ever you do dont expect them to be as good as a high spec back-up solution, the things fail with regular monotomy, we have I would guess about 20 and over the past 6 months I would suspect we have lost 3…we dont recomend them for important back up jobs…but on the other hand the very first one i ever bought, a really old monster of a thing compared to the ones today, it has to be 5 years old or more is still going strong, its only 200gb but it works really well unlike the toshiba one on my desk…fooked after about 18 months…thankfully I backed up in three places, main hard drive partition, internal hard drive and this crap external unit…now going in the bin.

Agree with PC world, utter crap, we use them for stuff we have to get in a hurry but they are the worst company i have ever dealt with that is still going, mind you they do have a lot of useful stuff for the private buyer these days…

It`s forimportant stuff, mainly for my music.

yes my music is on the old one, it has 14.000 tracks (all off my cd collection)…its a maxtor unit…

Avid Media Array, 2.6TB’s storage, 2GB fibre channels sitting in my comms room waiting to be connected up. I digress, get the 1TB drive from Ebuyer. Decent price for massive storage. Backup critical stuff to DVD and you should be fine.

If this is storage on a reasonable budget then rather than buy 1 huge-mutha-of-a-drive, buy several smaller 250GB or 500GB drives. Also look at buying an identical set of drives and keeping them off site. Using this method if you have one hardware failure (and it still happens with hard drives) you will have an off-site back-up, not have to reinstate too much data (time consuming) and it’s fairly cost effective.

7,200rpm hard drives are much cheaper than they used to be and offer a faster speed and usually better connectivity. You want USB2.0 as a minimum and, if you are using a Mac, use the USB slots on the back of the machine as they are faster (might be the same for PC’s). If you can go to Firewire, then it is quick, but USB2.0 should be fine.
If you have cash, then look at RAID solutions.

All my hard drives are La Cie. They used to be awful but, (touch wood) they’ve been fantastic.

I hope that helps.
