My laptop has started behaving oddly…The task bar disappears from the screen and I can do nothing other than hit the off button. When I do this a message about an unresponding program appears.
I have no idea what the program is or where it is but think it’s the source of the problem.
Program shows as BrMfcWND.EXE
Anybody got any ideas on this?

well that process is the brother status monitor… for your printer.
It sounds like its crashing explorer. I assume your not using Vista? otherwise explorer would reload itself
Did you recently install the drivers for your printer? If so, you might want to uninstall the status monitor.
it’s either a problem with your printer software, if you have a ‘Brother’ printer, or malware.

Not using Vista . Brother printer has been installed for 6 months or more. What would cause it to start behaving like this?

had this with a work PC the other day it is a Virus, I had to do a rebuild on it as I could not get it off…
So, not good news then?? It is running slow and when I have multiple windows open I can’t pull them back up.
Recently changed from Kaspersky to Avast - maybe it was a bad move,

my first guess would be that BrMfcWND.EXE is actually not the culprit. If you could identify the real culprit, it would be easier to remove. Run a full scan and see what avast identifies
if you need any help give me a shout I leave in southeast london… maybe able to see what I can do for you…
but sounds alot like what I had and I was pretty much screwed as there was no way of getting the task bar up. and boy was it slow…
Even the virus scanned did not clean it…

Avast is good. My other half Dave uses it all the time so added it to my computer as I was using AVG, also good, by not free.
Its always worth doing scans on a regular basis including disk cleanups and defrags.

Just run a full scan and it found 7 problems - cleaned them and all seems back to normal.

There’s a free version of AVG too which seems to be OK.
Hopefully it’s sorted, make sure you rescan after a full shutdown/power off and restart, as some of these little buggas are very persistent and reproduce more than a good catholic mother !
Yeah I used to use that but got fed up of renewing it every 30 days so paid for it in the end.

I guess I’ll have to take it in to somebody to sort out.
The proper free version doesn’t need re-registering or owt, just install it and leave it updating daily !
