Commuter bike wanted £500 mark

Hey everyone, my company carpark is closing and I don’t want to put my bike on the street so am looking for a cheap commuter bike. Mileage not an issue, just want a straight bike that is cheap and obviously not a previous write off. Send me a message if you have anything. Thanks.

IMHO £500 budget is too low for anything half decent or reliable. I would say min. £800 or ideally £800-£1200…

My first bike was £1K and that was a bit of a heap that needed lots or work. It was running ok when I sold it but that was about £2K later after general servicing and things wearing out.

It needed, chain and sprockets, valve clearances, and a service.

Over the course of a year it also needed the following:BatteryBrake light switchGripsFork sealsRear disk (warped)Exhaust (spot welded baffle detached so it was rattling)It all added up. Just be aware that a low purchase price might mean expense elsewhere.

speaking from experience, old cheap bikes mean a lot more maintenance costs.

Why no previous write offs?

Cat b/c are ok…

Can get a c90 for that I rekon

dont you mean D/C ???

Cat B is a breaker only

Insurers are funny with writeoffs.

Seems crazy how much old bikes go for. If the bike new cost £5k, why are people willing to pay £1.5-2k for it when it’s 10 years or older??

The dealer only offered me £900 for my 2007 Gixxer for a part-ex against a new R1 so surprised to see what older and worse condition bikes actually go for.

Maybe an old bike is not the way forward then if the costs are that high to maintain. A train ticket would be better option.

I am exploring my options as from 1st of September will no longer ride my gixxer to work as I will not have anywhere to park securely. I wanted a old bike that’s worth very little that no one will steal.

This is well worth a look - Honda CB500

I have no connection to this bike, just surfing Fleabay.

There’s a car park literally round the corner if you still work in the same place that’s manned by security and free…

consider a scooter?

you can get a good one for 500 i guess…

Really 900 quid??? Why so low, or is that a typo.

No type, my bike has over 48,000 miles on the clock…I bought it with 22k two and a half years ago.

Would consider a scooter too…

I told the dealer I could sell it for parts for more, they were completely disinterested but still asked me if I’d buy a new bike from them…told them I’d rather buy from their administrators. Bunch of thieves, would rather they say we are not willing to take yours as partex rather than slapping me with a stupid bid.

From Bike Trader. There isnt much choice under £500 ! There is this thing I have copied, there are scooters and there is a pile of Chinese crap which IMHO you should avoid.
