Colortec paint repairs

Well a technician from Colortec turned up this afternoon to do repairs on my scooter that I unfortunately dropped on to my stonechipped concrete drive two weeks after I got it…

It was actually a portuguese fellow and a woman called Maria who was the wife of the boss of the franchise that I booked the job with. The technician didn’t really speak English so I was chatting to the lady who was translating what he was saying. They were both very friendly though.

Just to show what the damage looked like (dirty scooter…):

The first thing they did was tell me that they don’t carry motorcycle paints, so they’d brought along all the different car greys they had, and they’d find a match from that. I thought it would be a more sophisticated approach but they were playing around with bits of cardboard sprayed in various colours. To be honest I was a bit worried about this… but they said that if I was unhappy with the finished product they would order in the specific paint and they’d come and respray. They thought they’d found a few closely matched colours so the process started.

First of all the scratch marks were sanded down (lots of dust!).

Then filler was added to the area and dried with a heat gun.

…and then sanded again with various grades of paper until smooth.

Then a layer of filling undercoat added to the damaged areas.

Then it was time to mask off for painting.

After a bit of playing with the paints to see what really was a good match (my heart was in my mouth at this point) a colour (porsche meteor grey no less) was decided on and the spraying commenced.

Two coats of the paint were applied. Then two coats of varnish.

After this another coat of quick drying top coat was added with a spray can and left to dry for a little while before the masking was removed.

The match is pretty damned good. From some angles I thought that the original paint (on the boot lid) looked bluer than the porsche paint but looking up close I couldn’t tell the difference. I think it was just the sky reflecking on the different panels in different ways. The newly painted panels certainly make the original panels look like they need a clean!!

I’m currently waiting for the paint to dry for another hour or so before I put the rear grab handle back on and move it back into the garage.

It’s a pretty darned good job really, I’m impressed, but feel a bit sorry for the Portuguese technician as Maria told me he’d only get about £30ish for the job that I paid £120 for. His boss had said it’d be a 45minute job but it took about 3 hours!!

They were both very friendly and helpful. I was told not to wash the scooter for 24hours and to give it a good wax. They also said the paint would change a bit as it is in the sunlight.

I’ll post more pictures once I’ve cleaned it up and waxed it.

Wow, that looks like a very neat job and the price sounds reasonable.

How much paint did he use? I ask as it would be helpful to know what amount to pre-order.

Thank you posting such a detailed account. Very helpful indeed.

Kathy

I think he only used one can of paint, I don’t know if it had already been used or whether it was empty at the end.

I don’t know whether the price was really correct either given that the boss thought it’d be a 45min job!! I had asked chipsaway to quote too. The guy from there said 2 hours and £199 which is probably nearer…

Good post and good pictures.

Odd bit. I wouldn’t wash the scoot or polish it for at least a week. Even modern acrylics take some time to properly harden.

Might be worth a PM to Grimbusa for his opinion.

Yeah I’ve decided I’ll probably wait until next weekend before I clean it anyway as I’ve ordered in some special wax (Collinite super double coat) which will probably arrive tomorrow, but I don’t expect I’ll have time to wash it properly until next weekend.

Nice job mate, Looks brand new.
