I love it when the clocks go forward… lighter evenings = more bike time!!!
Ugh I find this pointless exercise extremely tedious.
I agree, to a point.
After all some believe the main reason we change the clocks is because some children were killed on the isle of Skye in the 60’s. Which actually didn’t happen according to a local historian and reporter, after speaking to the older folk of the island.
Lets just stay in summer time (Zulu +1) (zulu = Greenwich Mean Time) all year. Ok so it gets later earlier we live in the northern part of the planet, not the bahamas (unfortunately)!
Call me stuuuuuuuupid, but what is the story behind changing the clocks?? (History never was my strongest subject?!) ![]()
It would make a lot of sense to change the way we do our clocks.
The real reason that clocks go back for winter is so that the Scots can have lighter mornings…so whilst we’ve got the current lot of Scots in government there’s no chance of a change.
It can be confusing, particularly as the way that people look at things. You could say that the current Daylight Saving Time (DST) is good because it gives us an extra hour of biking on Summer evenings (Hooray!) or you can see it as we lose evening/late afternoon biking time in Winter (Boo!). It all depends where you would otherwise put the clocks.
Not putting clocks back in winter would reduce road casualties, particularly amongst children (statistically proven).
Me, I’m all in favour of changing the system - now that the Scots have their own Parliament, let them choose their own time zones, so that we English don’t have to suffer for them (again). Hee hee.

I think it’s fine how it is.
If they leave it on summertime, it might get dark an hour later in the evenings, but that’s still 4.45 in deepest December. Either way, it would still be dark when you leave work - and it wouldn’t get light until getting on for 9am.
There’d be no useful daylight at all for anyone with a job in an office.
I always thought it was cos the farmers had lighter nights at harvest time?:doze:
i loikes light late evenings…
roundabouts and lanes quiten down a bit…play time:D:D:D
So…going to school in the dark reduces casualties amongst children ? How does that work then?
I was at school when they decided not to change the clocks one year (yes, in Scotland). We all had to wear Day-glo jackets and have reflective stripes on our school bags etc…all at great cost to our parents…It was a total disaster. Kids running around in the pitch dark - day-glo or not - was not a good thing and the idea was abandoned the following year.
As to us having our own Parliament…last time I checked we had most of yours too…![]()
Trust me, changing the clocks makes little difference up North of Aberdeen…Peterhead is so dreary at the best of times its rare to see the sun whatever time of day it is! ![]()
As a time bore I love it when I get asked questions like this!
The origin of the modern practice of daylight saving time started in WWI when it was introduced as a very successful way of reducing coal consumption by using the available light more usable. The Germans invented it, and everyone else followed. There had been campaigns for years before to introduce it but WWII encouraged Governments to adopt it. In WWII many countries adopted double summer time.
I always thought it was Benjamin Franklin who came up with the idea ?
I hate it when the clocks go forward. You get an hour less sleep. It take me at least a week to get over it.
Can’t wait - means I get extra time when I get home to fiddle with the bikes
Thanks for all the ‘day light saving’ stories, in all seriousness, I find them quite interesting :)… I might even bore some people with my new found knowlegde this evening over dinner!! ;)

Stay in bed for an extra hour! ![]()
i was always told it was something to do with the war, never knew what though…
i like the clocks going forward, it signals summer time to me!
I hate winter, suffer with SAD badly, living in the dark makes me grumpy as hell…
Daylight saving was created in order to bring all clocks in the uk in sync with Londonbikers.com
Oh an important point for all of us road fatalities are reduced by the extra daylight perovided.
cheers for the reminder;)

I think its great. Late evenings are one of the things that make Britain the best place to be in Summer.
