Checking oil.

I put the bike on paddock stands and check the oil on one side of the garage and the sight glass shows the oil resting at the upper level markPut the bike on the paddock stands on the garage floor a few feet to the right of the previous position and it says hall full!

The concrete garage floor looks perfectly level - but isn’t.

Maybe I should get a spirit level to see how the level the bike actually is!

e.g. I might think it’s half way up when it’s actually empty! :w00t:I’m also thinking of getting a laser alingment tool for the chain. This is probably the biking equivalent of obsessive compulsive disorder or something. . . :ermm:

I normally check the oil when I filling up at the petrol station… normally there is a area where you can fill up your air normally I find that level as people will do the normall check with the car…

I don’t know about checking the oil on its side stand… my cbr 125 manual says to check the oil when the bike is up right… also I have to run the bike for a few min and then let the oil set.

All well and good, but not all bikes have a centre stand :stuck_out_tongue:

When you put the bike on the paddock stand, you are tilting the engine forwards, so the oil level will rise…

Check oil when the bike is level, both wheels on the ground.

wot he said:D

Or put both ends on stands  - it’s a lot easier than trying to hold the bike up

I use two paddock stands, front and rear - so the bike is straight and level (in theory).

When it’s on the stands try putting a spirit level across the swingarm bars and seeing which location is best (of course if you have a single swingarm forget that suggestion!!)

Yeah - bought a spirit level today! - will give it a go M  .

Not sure if that’s OCD or just being thorough.

After a run, stop the engine and get a mate to look in the sight glass while you sit astride and hold it vertical, or lean it very slightly against a wall and look yourself.

It’s not that critical. Anywhere between full and low should be o.k.

Needs a mate to operate this system - not always available;)

just out of interest, what does the manual suggest as the correct way to check the oil?

the “accepted” way for mine is …

  1. take bike for ride to make sure it’s warmed up.
  2. park bike on sidestand, leave it about 10 minutes.
  3. put bike on center stand, leave it about 10 minutes
  4. check the oil in the sight glass.
ah the beauty of oil/air cooled twins

Yeah Oldguy - I will get someone to give it a butchers next time I’m sitting on it to double check.

True Jetstream - there isn’t always someone about - maybe I should have some kind of gimp slave chained up in the garage for these situations. . . :w00t::smiley:

My manual says what you’ve described above Kenny - it’s interesting how different oil levels can appear due to differences in temperature etc - like after a long high speed run when the oil molecules are fully expanded - it can appear that the oil has been overfilled (above the upper reading in the sight glass) - when a more moderate temperature reading shows it to be bang on the upper level.

I really need to get out more. . . :ermm:

lol the precis is for mine , look at the sight glass, if you can see oil (any oil) just ride

You’re method sounds the best! ;)

Hence the mention of “a wall”. Commonly available, but if not, a tree, a farm gate, a parked car, anything solid will do.

And like kenny said, if you can see oil, it’s o.k.

I’ll prop it up against my ZX7R. That’s pretty solid. . . :hehe:

I’ve sorted out my oil check conundrum - I stick the mini spirit level on the tank - get the bubble in the centre and then reach my arm down and take a pic of the sight glass with my phone!

Checking the level with the bike on front and rear paddock stands on a rough garage floor can give a seriously misleading impression of your oil level - from over filled to nearly empty depending on what bit of the floor the bike is on.

Let the p1ss taking commence! :hehe:

I bet all your CDs are in alphabetical order as well:P:D

And I wash my hands every 5 minutes!
