Changing front forks.

O.K. It started as a pretty good idea. I’m fed up with the indifferent road tyres available for the wheel sizes of the Aprilia Pegaso Trail, and I never go off road much, so I’ll change the wheels for those from the Pegaso Factory.

Back wheel, no problem, loads of room for the fatter rim/tyre but it’s the front that’s a bit problematic.
Got the spare hub so that’s an easy build, then start thinking things through. The fatter front tyre will not fit between the existing slider brace/mud guard bracket. So:

Wider triple clamps from the Strada or Factory to re space the existing stanchions, easy if a tad pricey. (ebay)
Wider slider brace. If the forks are out there, these must be too, so doable.
Longer front axle to suit. As above.

Then the fun starts:

I need to reuse the existing front hub for economy so, a couple of spacers need to be made. Any half decent machine shop. (If there are any left in S E England?)
If the hub is re spaced I need a sandwich plate to move the brake caliper over to align with the disks new position. Doable. Either the above or hand made.
Longer caliper bolts now needed. Shouldn’t be too much of a problem, should it? No, really, should it?

So: Before I end up spending so much money I should go buy a new bike, what have I forgotten?

Can you not just send your wheel as it is to a wheel builder and get him to stick a fatter rim on it for you but keep all the brakes etc as they are ?

NumNum: That was plan A. And that’s when I found out the wider tyre didn’t fit between the slider brace.

Plan B was change the back/leave the front. Let’s just say that was not a good idea

So Plan C is **** or bust.

id allso know a shop that can make spacers up i need to get some made up so i can use my front offroad wheel and front supermoto wheel on these up side down’s i bought for my bike XD

Will a decrease in radius make any difference ? If its smaller that way will it clear ? Its difficult when I can’t see the thing .

I like plan D myself … Trade in for a Dorsoduro

NumNum Already checked out the reduced radius thing and the answer is no.

Or in my case “Bugger!”.

Your plan D is pretty sound (though not your suggestion) and I had thought long and hard about that. It was when I factored in the cost of divorce that I realised there was a flaw.

He you bought something that looked similar would she notice .?
Looks like your going the long way round . I do that all the time but I hate seeing people lead themselves into the difficulties and problems I get myself into ha ha . Although touch wood project kawa is going okay apart from a part supplier taking his bloody time .

Parts supplier taking their time? Who’d have thought that would ever happen?

The answer to the “would she notice” question is yes!

I’m well aware that my Plan A could well be an expensive mistake, I have a long and inglorious history of those, so I own the T shirt(s). Come to think about it I probably own the copyright .

I would think a sneaky new bike misdemeanour would be a dog house rather than divorce offence . I would say you need to factor doghouse for new bike time against doghouse for to much time spent in the garage . I think either way you may have to bark for your dinner .

Hmmm…

I’ve got me a nice new brick built, tiled roof double garage with full mains electrics and water and the roof space could be converted to a sleeping platform. It even has mains drainage running though a manhole.

Sounds like an upmarket dog house.

I just might think this through again.

Has it got an internet connection? If not you might have to use Blue Lagos’ method of going to the pub to use the wifi;)

Just a case of moving the wireless router and plugging in a better aerial then I have the internet in there too. With a quick mod on the laptop I could get on line TV as well.

I’m still not thinking this through logically, am I?
