Mrs. O collected a parking ticket last night, when the whole family went out to dinner, due to very confusing signage and apparent contradictions between that and what was on the pay and display machine.
While looking to see what the law says about these things, I discovered ticketfighter.co.uk.
What a great site. So much straight forward info, including some case law precedents, but also links to the legislation governing all traffic signs and road markings, such as The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions. It’s staggering how proscribed in detail all this stuff.
And if the road signs/markings aren’t to the book any tickets issued for infringements, including speeding tickets cannot be enforced.
Well worth a look, though you’ll have to have some time on your hands if you want to go into detail.
Soon as I’m mobile again, I’m back to Bromley with my tape measure and a camera, I’m told
Pretty good site…but don’t place all your faith on it.
Make sure you get pics of the signs, lines on the road, ticket machine etc. Also inform them of any damage your vehicle sustained and the cost to repair it, when they lent against it to stick the ticket on…worked for me!
You aint seen the state of Mrs. O’s car. It’s the one that gets parked in or near schools in Deptford, Abbey Wood, Thamesmead and other desirable neighbourhoods.
The only problem you have is most councils will reject the appeals unless it is absolutely 100% obvious that it would get thrown out of an independent appeal.
Always worth going for the informal appeal first, but if rejected you have to be prepared to pay the higher amount if you really want to take them all the way. Thats how they get away with most of the time. The majority of people dont want to risk the higher penalty and so end up paying up.
Of course if you were caught red handed thats different, just try an appeal just in case
Most pretty much always decline the first appeal letter. if you’re right, keep fighting it and don’t give up. If you’re in the worng though, it’s not worth the hassle.

Not all councils are bad, I am in Tower Hamlets and one time my parking permit fell on the floor. By the time later that day when I realised after returning to the car I had got a ticket. I sent them a copy of my permit and said it was clearly valid although I have to admit I didn’t say it was on the floor and they cancelled the notice and apologised for the error.
I find Tower Hamlets are good most of the time missed council tax payments and general enquiries are always dealt with with understanding.
Camden and Westminster I have found when I was a courier to be the worst. I once got a ticket on Regent street after my bike had been knocked over and their was petrol all over the engine…I explained to the warden that if I started it there was the chance I would have a BBQ as a bike.
He gave me a ticket.
it was dismissed only when I went to the adjucator.
