Chain wear at track day

Hi all,

Does anyone know how much abuse a trackday puts on a chain? Mine is not great at the moment. It’s well adjusted, but it is sitting about 1mm from the red line that says ‘New chain required’ bit. There are also a few spots of rust on it.

How much abuse will a novice slot in a track day put on this? Should I look at getting a new one before I go?

what bike is it mate? can you post a close up pic?

What condition are the sprockets in? You’ll most likely need to replace the set after the trackday … why not play it safe and get it fitted before hand?

It’s a CBR600F - I’ll post some pics when I get it home tonight thanks!

The chances are that it will be fine and a bit of surface rust is ok but do get the bike thoroughly checked by a mechanic and confirmation that the rest of the bike is up to a blast round a track all day.

Don’t know about anyone else’s experience but I find that when the chain is reaching the end of it’s glorious life, it tends to go degrade pretty quickly

I’ve had the rest of it checked over in general just after it’s 12k service by an independant mechanic, and other than the cam chain tensioner which has now been replaced, it received a clean bill of health.

I think I’ll do the sensible thing and get it done before I go.

Expensive month this :frowning:

Makes perfect sense when you put it that way.

The rear sprockets looked ok when I had the rear wheel off to do tyres yesterday, but I didn’t see the front one.

Buy a new one, A track day is perfect to wear a chain in, DID make the best chains.

When you say jump out of planes, Are you in the Paras?

Essential rubber sorted me out with a new set yesterday, so that’s a load off my mind

No, I just jump recreationally. Well, I haven’t in the last 2 months because my gear has been in for maintenance and I’m currently hooked on the bike, but once the shiny wears off, I’ll be back in the air

That may or may not be the case but their customer service is crap

I fitted my new one with new sprockets before my track day - the way I looked it was that its a lot of money to waste if your chain breaks or renders your bike useless on the day, your gonna replace it anyway so might aswell do it sooner rather than later and just get on with enjoying your track day and not worrying about your chain

Good. As per Mark’s comment - it’s just you and the track, now.

Enjoy!

Iv never had one go wrong so iv never had to deal with them. The isle of man TT racers use DID chains and look how much hammer they take.

There are all sorts of chains used on the TT not just DID . . . do you know who the importer of DID chains is ? Do you know what else they import ? There’s a challenge for you

My dad used DID when he raced there and they never went wrong, All the other chains he`s used use to break going over the hump back bridge, But the DID did there job very well. And no i dont.

You say that like I’m not utterly terrified and crapping myself. This should be funny to watch :hehe:

He probably didn’t have it adjusted properly, did he take the bike to his local shop for a check over before he raced ? Would have been a good idea

Well to say he was going to risk his life on the most dangours track in the world no he didnt he just went out without checking anything :hehe:

once you get there and are looked after, do the sighting laps etc, you will be fine
