The bike has 20000 miles and will be having its FOURTH sprocket and chain set. These aren’t crap items either, the chains are good and the sprockets are steel.
Service dept said “what do you expect if you don’t clean it” ERR I dunno, 8-10k miles? Not 5.
Do people really lube and adjust their chain every couple hundred miles? The chain has to run slack - bike’s got about a foot of suspension travel, and a scott oiler wouldn’t help in the sand/mud and would likely shake off the beast anyway.
The bike does 250 miles on a tank, and some days that tank gets filled more than once. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bike/rider at BM carrying chain lube, so how does this work logistically?
I might have to buy a f***ing shaft-driven GS at this rate. What gives?
i clean and lube mine every saturday normally weather permitting, o the joy of not having a garage, i usually do 150 miles a week, last chain lasted me 15k with 9 trackdays and plenty of wheelies
Yep, lube my chain once or twice a week, use it a chance to check everything’s where it should be etc!! And I’m probably only doing 200 miles a week max.
I lube my (OEM) chain once a week, and give it a good clean probably every two to three weeks. It hardly ever needs adjusting, but I’m not sure if that’s because it’s a new bike or not.
So far it’s done 12,000 miles - but I’m not sure how much longer it’ll last.
Don’t really see why a chain oiler would shake off if sited correctly??
If you’re doing those kinds of miles I’d say the things are pretty much essential TBH! The application of fresh lube “washes” the dirty grinding paste road filth represents away so it doesn’t wear your chain out. And it’s a darn sight easier to get off than super-tacky chain lubes.
It’s just that I noticed they do a “squidgy” reservoir which won’t suffer from the vibes as much as the hard plastic ones. Have a look, see what you think.
not really a comparable but my oem chain and sproket done 25000 with minimal maintenance on my 675 and had still plenty life in them but I did get a new Afam for nothing so decided to upgrade…
I clean and lube mine sometimes. Sometimes when I feel guilty or if I want to make my neighbours think I am a real knowledgeable bike mechanic type person. I use a degreaser and then that Castrol Wax lube which doesn’t spray everywhere and ruin my excellent cleaning job.
So far I have done 15000 miles in a year on the stock ones and the chain and sprocket are ok. The chain is pretty clean, can’t see much if any rust on it, and the sprocket has just faded in colour. I ride pretty hard generally on most days and have ridden through rain and snow.
14500 miles on the OEM set. the last 12000 have been with a scottoiler fitted and I’ve only just adjusted the chain for the first time… Does make sense. Before that I used to clean/lube the chain every couple of weeks. Most of my bikes have had scottoilers fitted though. BUT I still give it a jolly good clean with a toothbruth and paraffin every couple of months anyhow. Keeps things nice and clean.
Did 6000 without adjusting it - lubed it 3 or four times.
Now its done 13,500 and I think it’s about to say goodbye soon. Sprocket looks okay, but I’ll change anyway.
Any recommendations as to a nice set for a 675?
Also - if anyone has OCD with chain cleaning, I’d be happy to park it in front of them with the cleaning stuff
Agree with Properjob…a few guys on the CCM forum have Scottoilers fitted without a problem.
I maintain my CCM chain manually and especially if I go greenlaning, because it creates a great grinding paste…:w00t:
Well you’ve met me. I have a can of lube and WD40 that lives in the top box. My previous chain and sprokets lasted only 8K so I’m trying to get more out of this set. Plus you can really feel the different through the bars after you’ve lubed the chain. Bungie a can to your bike and get lubing.
