Chain maintenance

Chain lube: every 500 km or whenever it looks dry or I rode in the wet.

Chain cleaner: rub down vigorously with chain cleaner every 2-3k or so, then re-lube.

That sound ok to you?

I clean and lube the chain every week.
No point lubing it if you don’t clean it first - you need to get the gritty stuff off first because it’s like grinding paste.
Unlike many others, these days I just use whatever engine oil I’ve got lying about in the garage to lube it - does the job and cost a lot less than chain lube.

Clean and relube every three hundred miles - more frequently if weather is bad - seem to get about 15 to 20k miles out of my chains.

I spray the 6 inches or so that are on my rear sprocket every morning before riding off, just with a dry PTFE lube. Takes ten seconds while the bike is warming up. I do about 80 miles a day every day so I try to do all I can to keep stuff like this in order.

Actually do a proper clean and lube every few weeks when I remember  My chains last forever.

Duncan

I clean the chain sprockets and swingarm with parafin every 10 days or so and re-lube aftwerwards, usually do it as part of a full bike clean

scottoiler and change my chain every 20’000 miles:D

Yep, Scottoiler. My chain is about halfway down the marks after 20,100 miles, I’ve adjusted it 6 times since new. I clean the side plates every time I wash the bike just to keep the surface rust off.

When I told someone that I always cleaned my chain before re-lubing it they looked at me oddly and asked why!! I use the chain wax stuff, gets quite messy if you just keep topping it up!! Nice to know that it’s not just me excercising my OCD :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s nice to see some female mechanics on the forum.

i allways clean mine after use :w00t:

+1

currently on the OEM chain and sprockets which have now done 22,000 miles on the ZX10… (although I reckon that’s the limit lol)…

Shut it sausage fingers :stuck_out_tongue:

+2 except i dont get that sort of mileage outta my chain, cant think why

My chain gets a thorough clean and lube on a weekly basis and i use Wurth High Performance Lube as it doesn’t fling off so keeping my wheel free of crap.

Chain is cleaned with a tooth brush and chain cleaner/parafin and WD40 then coated in Lube. It’s now done 14k miles but will prob need changing next service as there are a few tight spots.

Dawn i doubt your OCD is a patch on mine

I agree, bet you’d win on the OCD when it comes to bike cleaning  But then you have every reason to have OCD, you have a nice shiny Ducati

and if it isn’t kept spick and spam it breaks down :stuck_out_tongue: shame ya dont take as much pride in yaself :P:D;)hmmm as for her ocd…thats anuva thing :w00t:

:hehe:

I clean it when I remember to and have both the lube and the bike handy.
