CG125 cutting out

New to biking so please excuse my ignorance if this is a stupid question

Got a 57 plate Cg125 3000miles fully serviced and well looked after, have always had a problem with it starting. I can have ridden for 1-2 hours but once I have stopped even for a few minutes I have to put the choke on to get it started again no major hassle but slightly annoying, over last couple of weeks it has cut on me a few times at between 40-50mph on the A12 at rush hour not funny!! I know it is an old design but is this normal and am I just gonna have to put up with it until I get a bigger bike. Been into Honda dealership they said just have to put choke on when starting up and turn it off before setting off which is fine but does not explain cutting out 30 mins into my journey. Any advice or ideas greatly appreciated.

:D:D:D

I’m not sure what the problem is, but I can tell ya it shouldn’t be doing it. I learned on a '53 plate CG125, and even after the engine had been off for 10 minutes it would start up okay. It will be harder to start when cold than bike’s with more cyclinders, but still… it definitely shouldn’t ever be cutting out on you :S

Could be that its running too lean and thats why your needing to have to run it with the choke out but it could be a few different things.

I had a CG 125 which kept cutting out and that turned out to be a leak in the gasket around the carb, easy/cheap fix - just identifying the problem in the 1st place was a pain! It would cut out in the rain & all sorts :stuck_out_tongue:

It definately shouldnt be cutting out though - even in the coldest of weathers mine would be off the choke after 5 mins or so I wouldnt need it on again during the day.

I also had a '57 CG125. I can’t say anything about it cutting out, but also thought I had a problem in that I could never start it without choke - even if already warmed up. I eventually found that the throttle was quite sensitive and I had always been giving it too much to start. To start with a warm engine, I would have to give it the smallest amount of throttle - no throttle or a small twist would not get it going. I really do mean the smallest amount, so you’re barely even twisting it. With a bit of practice it was no longer a problem and could get it started every time, even a cold engine left standing overnight (without choke).

Thanks for your replies guys dont feel like such a bimbo now :stuck_out_tongue:

I think the mechanics at Honda thought I was just a nuerotic woman even though they couldnt get it to start without the choke !! Will give the tiny amount of throttle a go but think I will book it back in anyway as cutting out on A12 scared me sh****ss :w00t: and might not be so lucky if it happens again dont want to become another statistic.

My wife has a CG. They’re very reliable and what you described is not normal in my opinion. As stated above, it could be a number of things mechanical or just rider’s technique. If you’re in North London I don’t mind having quick look to see if its a human/ mechanical issue. (I’m in Shoreditch).

Cheers Franko have booked it back into Honda tomorrow but if no joy I will give you a shout live in Essex but work in Hackney so not too far from you.

Cool. Good luck. PM me if you need a hand.

silly question, are you sure your not leaving the choke on or mistaking the choke been on when you think its off?

reason i say this is picked up a cg a while back, been sitting for few yrs, never had 1 b4. so i strip carbs clean out pet tank, oil changed new plug and battery, so theres me kicking it over with wot i thought a bit of choke, starts str8 away then i turn choke off (thats wot i thought anyway, lol) and it would stop, was turning choke on. it seemed to me the choke switch was stupid, lol, when you think putting choke on its off etc, seemed upside down to me, lol.

got bike for nowt and sold it for 500 notes, woo hoo, lol.

The choke is def off. Before each journey I have to start it up with the choke on and turn choke off before leaving it to tick over for about 5-10 mins,It will not tick over with choke on and no throttle.

Was also one of the first things Honda mechanics asked me to show them when I took it in.

Definately not normal I have a honda xr125 and I recently had a 08 CG125 courtesy bike and they both ticked over and started okay once warmed up. The location of the choke is a pain though.

I have a honda workshop manual and it recommends checking the following:

Carburetor pilot screw adjustment

Intake air leak

Spark test

Ignition timing

hi may be carb iceing but never heard of it a cg,or u may have water in the carb which gets pick up by the main jet and will cut the motor, water can get in when u wash you bike or condensation in the tank had it on son in laws 05 636 it got into the fuel pump in the tank clean it ran sweet again.had in my fizzy many many years ago.claen the carb is best
