I’m busy debugging an issue with my CBR600RR. For the past month or so it has had trouble starting on occasion, usually after I’ve just ridden for a while, turned off for a few minutes and then try to start again. A common scenario would be when filling up with petrol I’d be unable to start again after paying up.
It would turn of initially, and following that there will just be a clicking sound coming from the general seat area. The dash also starts to go crazy. See video:
Does anyone recognise these symptoms and have any suggestions on what to start trying to troubleshoot this?
i may be as simple as an imperfect contact (oxydated fuse maybe)… give that a try before starting to check the relays… also check if the battery is within the normal limits (amps and stuff)
Sounds like the battery doesn’t have enough charge in it. If you have a multi meter you could check the Voltage. Or boost it with the bike next to it and see if that resolves the issue.
Also, there is a small black connector behind the dash unit that goes to the main loom. Make sure that is firmly seated. (You might have to displace the nose cone to gain proper access to the connector)
An update on this issue. Had the battery on an optimiser all week, connected it up today and bike starts no problem. Have run it up to temperature and all seems good.
I have a feeling I’m going to hit issues again at some point, how can I go about testing my reg/rec? And is the only way to test my alternator to buy a voltmeter?
This should give you all the information you need.
Go through the relevant steps carefully and make a written note of the results.
If you’re still stuck when you’re done post the findings here and one of us will diagnose.
You certainly need a voltmeter, 10 quid from B and Q.
