Do you put out carved halloween pumpkins in the UK?
It’s a tradition here in the States…I usually try to come up with fun designs each year…some scary…the next year funny…last year I had one with the logo of my favorite college football team carved into it.
This is going to be my design this year…I PMSL every time I look at it.
Originally the Jack O’Lantern is an Irish/Scottish tradition, and we use turnips to make lanterns at home. When Irish emigrants started to set up in America, there were no turnips to be found so they used the next best thing - pumpkins. The lanterns weren’t associated with Halloween (another Celtic tradtition) until the mid 19th century in the US.
More recently pumpkin jack o’lanterns have been adopted in Ireland and the UK - although my old man still carves a turnip

coughs* well actually it originates from Ireland. The Irish used to carve out large potatoes, swedes or turnips and put candles in them. With the introduction of the pumpkin, it was supersized :DThe UK doesn’t do Halloween as big as the US does… but I do celebrate Samhain. It’s my fav festival of the year and I like doing the sweeties in the guts thing for the trick or treaters - that’s a bowl, with sweeties (in wrappers) and pumpkin guts - stick hand in and ewwwwwwww! I go trick or treating with my son, nieces and nephews and we only visit the houses that have decorations out. As a rule, we don’t have any egg throwing on our estate, loads of families out.

People put out alot of decorations…scaregrows…fall decorations (hay bales with fall flowers, carved pumpkins…that kind of thing.)
Halloween night, the kids all don their costumes and go out trick or treating…walking door to door ringing doorbells to receive candy. My Granddad usually comes over and helps me pass out candy…he loves seeing all the little kids in their costumes.
