Carpenter/joiner wanted

…I’m getting a bit frustrated and just wondered if any of you lot knew what can be done with wood and can do it. Or know people that do.

I need a few Victorian pattern four panel doors made to measure and in my bit of S E London/N W Kent, I’m being given super silly quotes and told I can have them next century. Perhaps.

Now, given a decently equipped woodwork shop I could make these damned things myself for about £100 in materials, so in my locale carpenters are looking to make about £500/600 a day for labour and overheads. That’s almost BMW sevice money.

So. Any carpenter/joiners out there, or has anyone got a recommendation?

Shouldn’t be too difficult, there are joiners buying work at the moment.

Although if you’re quoted £100 for materials walk away. You want them made out of a suitable timber and door stock at that otherwise they’ll look great when you first get them, then twist to b**gery just after the cheque’s cleared.

Big difference between a DIY job, and one done properly by a time served Joiner.

Mad-Dog (dhofty) might be able to help?

Interesting response: £100 is a rough price for North America clear door stock for the framing.

So what do you know that I don’t? And how come you know?

Reading your post I took a few victoran panel doors to mean 3 or 4 and £100 to be the total cost of materials required to produce them, including stiles, rails, panels, mouldings around panels etc. All in all £100 seems a bit cheap if you’re buying in small quantity and cheap timber (especially softwood) has a tendency to twist and warp. I was advising caution so you don’t waste you’re money ;).

I’m guessing you’re not a chippy as you wouldn’t need a lot of room to make them up youself, and unless you’re closely matching existing doors a half decent router, chopsaw and a couple of stools is really all you need to save yourself hassle a good few quid.

And if I’m wrong and you are a chippy, you’ll know why I mentioned the difference between a proper job and a DIY one

By the way have you considered looking at reclaimed doors, possibly a touch oversize so they can be planed to fit your frame properly ?

Ah, I see the error. I was taking about £100/door for the framing timber.

It’s re claiming doors that has driven me to wanting to spend money on having a few new ones built.

It’s a time thing.
