Canvas Luggage Suggestions (and rucksack)

I’m thinking I should get some strap on canvas luggage. I was originally wondering about something like this -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/OL101-Oxford-X50-Lifetime-Panniers/dp/B007JSNZGM/ref=sr_1_69?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1335273314&sr=1-69

There are similar options that look a little cheaper, such as -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/OXFORD-FIRST-TIME-MOTORCYCLE-PANNIERS/dp/B000R59342/ref=sr_1_4?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1335273071&sr=1-4

Are the more expensive ones worth it?

While I’m at it, the rucksack I bought has started to fall to bits already. I’ve been given a refund, so are there any suggestions for a rucksack, perticularly one that lets you connect the two straps across the top of your chest?

Kriega for rucksack… the R30 is the only one that’s waterproof so if that’s an issue go for that.

Damn comfy

Wow. Kriega is pretty expensive stuff!

I’m quite tempted by their DryBag…

It’s TOP quality stuff… they’re in a league of their own when it comes to luggage…

I have the US-20 and US-10 and they’ve been excellent at what I want… completely waterproof (except the top pocket!) and so easy to clip on/ off and carry around

+1 for Kriega US bags. I love my US-20 and want a US-10 now too.
Had an R35 for a couple of weeks but really didn’t like the pressure the strap put on my chest so I’d try one first if I were you.
I find the most comforable rucksacks are the smaller hiking style ones as they’re designed to be comfortable for a long period of time - they’re not fully waterproof tho so a liner is a good idea if you’re likely to be on a long wet ride.

The r25 has a more comfortable chest strap making it better for every day riding

I do get what you mean on the R35 though I managed to solve a lot of it because of incorrectly tightening one side over another.

I have a Kriega R25 that you can try and buy if you want. I haven’t used it in a while, and don’t I will again. PM if your interested.

I’ve got some of those canvas panniers. You’ve seen them on the Brugge run I think. They aren’t bad don’t load them up with too much weight though.

Thanks, PM sent

I used to use ex army canvas bags as throw overs untill on a trip to the lakes with fish face on pillion we pulled into lancaster services to find one bag had been touching the exhaust and caught fire and all her clothes were burnt

I did something similar with the first canvas panniers I ever had. Melted against my Transalp exhaust and melted a work phone I’d been lent for a week! Ooops.

Something’s gone very wrong if panniers get down to touch my exhaust now…

Kriega are excellent, use a lot of their stuff, highly recommended
however i may look at these panniers from sw-motech

Kriega are rock solid and you can go really fast and it doesn’t fall off.

This is how the waterproof covers did on my Oxford soft/ textile panniers: http://londonbikers.com/articles/image/18741/47862

So Kriega R25 from Kevsta, very nice. Could hardly tell I had anything on when I used it this evening to go and collect a Kriega US10 I bought for £20. Very pleased.

I may still try and get a US20 as well, to give me different options depending on my load

The combinations you can do are pretty good and one bit of kit bolts on to the other very securely!

Completely random recommendation, but check out Alpkit’s dry bags. I use a 20 litre one strapped to the back of my striple. Cheap as chips (£9), handy loops to secure it to the bike and completely waterproof.

Very much not what I’m looking for tbh. I’m after things specifically designed to fit onto a bike… or me. I have other things I can ‘strap’ to me. I want something comfortable and supported. Thanks though, they do look interesting, just not for this purpose

A couple of bungee chords and thats easily strapped to the back of the bike causing you no problems.

Bungies where anchored to the rear pegs, which are no longer there.
