Can you insist on original parts only for an insurance claim repair?

Hi All,

I have been riding for 15 years and never had to claim before. My neighbour has driven over my Suzuki Bandit 1200 yesterday whilst reverse parking. He wanted to buy the parts and let me do the repair which was o.k till he saw the price of an original Suzuki bandit exhaust system and he changed his mind to go thru his insurance.

My question is can i insist on original parts only, for example, only suzuki parts?

Cheers

Jim.

Yes,get your bike fully assessed and his insurance will have to cover it to get back to proper condition. They can’t specify aftermarket or pattern parts to save money.

I think the insurers only work on an original parts replacement scheme anyhow. You can always source original parts via Ebay/breakers for a lot less than from dealers though if you want to do a repair yourself, or get a nice fruity exhaust system fitted instead!

A bit too simple to say, “Yes, original equipment, new parts only”.

Legal or not, insurance companies operate on a “betterment” policy. If the bike is a few years old, they will claim that all new parts will make “betterment” of the value. If under a year (say) old they can’t pull that scam.

Just get the best deal going and remember: The basis is that you should be returned to the situation that you were in before the accident. Old or new parts, the bike should be worth exactly the same as before the accident.

as all said above but why do you not want a decent exhaust system?

I worked in the trade for years and “betterment” only applied to parts which had been damaged prior to the damage being claimed for OR had visible rust etc (on a wing for example) It had nothing to do with replacing a previously perfect 10 year old panel with a new one.
