Cameras on bikes

Heres a question, if you put a video camera on a bike, and recorded an accident, could the video be used as evidence?

If so, if you recorded a tin box almost cause an accident through doing something stupid, could the video be used to prosecute them?

If it could, why not ride with cameras on our bikes, and make the roads safer by getting the stupid minority of drivers banned?

Anyone know the answer?

They do exactly this in America … the insurance companies actually encourage driving with cameras!

However, I would imgine if you had an accident it ‘may’ be used as evidence … however I think you’d be struggling to use the footage to prosecute people who can’t drive!

The Police have special cameras for that … and they are all approved by the home office for that purpose, so your £50 Camera from Argos might not just cut it

To be admissable in court as evidence (an idiot rule of thumb) camera feeds have to have being monitored (watched) by two humans or two separate cameras have to have recorded the event and at least one monitored by a human at the time.

That stated, “they” can take money off you in £lots from a single shot a van mounted camera for parking or a couple of unmonitored shots from the “local safety camera partnership”. (Or similar borrocks title).

In civil cases, the law is a bit more lenient and might well admit private stuff if the camera is handed over to the police immediately after an accident so there is no question of tampering with the recording.

Practicality. Where are you going to keep the large data store needed to cover (say) even an hours ride at a decent resolution?

Storage isn’t really a problem. Modern SD card cameras can store a couple of hours ride on 2GB. No need to keep it unless you witness an accident.

Nice idea, but from past experience, the police have not been bothered when I have tried.

I would still record as a matter of evidence, I would think any insurance company and the legal department would be most appreciative to use as evidence.

These are used in the US for law enforcement as they have the tamper-proof frame time coding ability:

Word of warning though… and i can only speak for the police in the midlands as thats when i used the cam a lot… the bill can pull you and confiscate it. They can prosecute YOU if you have undertaken, crossed hatchings, speeding… (and can work out speed by simply identifying the road… and working out dostance between 2 points and seeing how long on playback it took to get form a-b.

So i make sure mine is hidden (looks like the rear shock res)… and also, know exactly how to blank it in the time you are flashed to pull over and him getting to the bike!! My ATC cam has a simple delete button ont the top.

This is what I’ve got …

Thanks for the feedback

So the cops wouldnt bother to do anything apart from use the video to see if they can book the owner, but the insurance companies would love the evidence.

So how about putting “Smile - you’re on VIDEO” on the back of a high viz, and not having a camera at all?

Videos may help depending upon the circumstances.

Being as it is illegal (now) to take pictures of buses, bridges and the police, How do you stop your on board camera capturing these images?

Pixilate them out?. Are Google being forced to remove pictures of buses from their 3D maps?.
