cam chain on a kawasaki zxr 400

hi my sons cam chain is nackered on his zxr400 is this a easy job or r there any pit falls doing it a certen way.it looks easy enough but ive not done one on a bike only cars and never on a sports bike.can it be done with the engine in ?

prob best to ask/look on the 400 forum, www.400greybike.co.uk

It can…

But it creates a weak link situation because as far as I know, you attach the new chain to the old one, passing it through until the old one is completely out, and then you rivet the ends of the new chain together.

I’ve never done a job like this so perhaps I’ve got something wrong here.

Post in the general section to get better response as this is a common job on any bike.

When you say ‘knackered’ do you mean the Cam chain tensioner is at its furthest extended?

or do you mean the cam chain / engine is rattly?

its all fixed now it was a cam chain guide that had broken.as the chain was in one peice it was no problem to reinstall.we had never taken a sports bike engine out b 4 so didnt know if there were any pitfalls but it was easy
