California Superbike School Level 4 - Bedford 2025

@pricetta and I completed Level 4 yesterday at California Superbike School UK at Bedford Autodrome! This was an individual-specific coaching day, where we practiced the previous lessons and then had help addressing aspects of our track riding that we as individuals felt we needed help with.

For me, it was improving my corner entry. I think for Claire it was the same. And whilst we have different experience levels, the coaches did a fantastic job at working out exactly what the problem was in both cases and gave us techniques to use to address the root causes.

It was really hard addressing my issue as it turns out my body position movements before and into a turn were not right (I was making multiple adjustments before, and during). I had to try and practice techniques that were really hard for one session on track, fighting instinct and then another technique later which in combination really helped me apply the fixes! By the end I had been able to massively improve the stability of the bike into corners and thus get into a corner much faster, harder and at greater lean, with confidence. Whoop!

As always, it was a great crowd, with a real mix of road and track riders, all working together with the brilliant staff at CSS!

We were blessed with the weather. It was hot and sunny! Can’t wait to go to Brno in a couple of weeks now!

If you haven’t been to CSS and want to improve your road or track riding, we cannot recommend CSS enough!

Getting some items out of the trailer for charging overnight

We stayed in a really nice little place before the track day

Getting our spot set up in the garages at the circuit

Registration starting to kick off

Always need to take a photo of the schedule to remember when we should be on track!

CSS like to have everyone’s bike lined up outside for initial checks

Having a spot of lunch and thinking about our previous coaching sessions

The turn simulator really good for helping understand and practice changes needed in body position on the bike as we enter an exit a corner it’s hydraulically powered and moves when the rider changes the steering input

I couldn’t help but fawn over this beautiful Aprilia RSV4!

Ah, a Suzuki GSXR 750 K4 model. This brings back some memories!

The school have a workshop/mechanic available to help with any bike issues

Adjusting my rear sets moving them up to enable me to get a better lock on position with my knee as this was a contributing factor to my poor body position in corner

All packed up time to go home

The circuit grounds are actually pretty nice!

Probably can’t see it very well here, but there’s some beautiful scenes over the surrounding areas which is a really very picturesque area

Wicked! I did CSS level 1 and 2 about 15 years ago at silverstone (where I met Rixxy and found out about Londonbikers as he had a hoodie on), really enjoyed it and as I was new to biking really learnt a lot.
Love Bedford too, its only 30 mins from me, normally cheap and I really like the section from the back straight to the pits. Loads of run off too if you make a mistake. Garage drop off is qwerky but its a small price to pay.

I have found not really ridden in anger for a year and a half that my (meagre) skills have totally gone and getting really nervous into the corners, luckily I have some coaching coming up with Mike “spike” Edwards at Cadwell, so hoping that and getting some more laps in will “banish the demons”

I’ll see how the coaching goes, its one to one, but CSS has always been on my mind as well.

Ah nice one! I think on-track coaching would be my next go to as well. I hear such good things from people who hire guys at Trackdays, ie Dean Ellison, etc.

Good luck at Cadwell. I’m sure you’re not as rusty as you imagine, I think the skills come back quickly!

Hopefully the coach will give you time to get up to pace and shake off the cobwebs.

What bike will you be on?

Yah I have done a couple of days with Gary Walton (Notso fast) back in 2017, and they were good.
I was considering Mike, or Dean, but I quite like Mikes personality (saying that I don’t really know Deans)
All in, it’s quite expensive but whilst I was enjoying TDs / Racing, I come away really frustrated with my riding and that put a bit of a taint on the experience.

Luckily at the mo I am at a point where I can stretch to a couple of days, so do it whilst I can.
Hopefully the old adage (you never forget to ride a bike) is true and I can get up to speed as I honestly feel like a beginner again.

PS. oh ill be on my 07 R1, which is abit like triggers broom now, different engine, then a replacement gearbox!

2023 (race bike) and two weeks ago at Snett (road bike)!
