Buying from a dealer

Evening folks!

Looking at buying a new bike (either new or second hand - not 100% sure yet) & considering options. Buying from a dealer is obviously gonna be more expensive, but the guarantee/peace of mind makes it a borderline decision versus buying privately. Right now I’m swaying towards buying from a dealer, but that “peace of mind” is turning out to be pretty damn expensive!

My question would be what kind of discount on the advertised price should I aim to get - I’m interested in something that’s on the court’s listed as £8k & say they offer me £3k for my current steed as trade in - so bike plus £5k for the new one. There’s obviously gonna be some flexibility, but I’m not sure how much to expect - e.g. should I suggest £4,900 or £4k?!

Any advice/experience?

Given the recent weather, it’s probably a good time to buy from a dealer as their books’ll be looking pretty empty/have a ‘red tint’ on 'em?

Cheers one & all!

Dave

None.

You`re lucky if they give you free oil.:stuck_out_tongue:

after 6 months will you still fill its new with 6kmils and seeing the next reg ride pass you.

There’s alway a deal of some sort but the first thing is to find out how little they will offer for your trade in. Reckon on two thirds to three quarters of what you think it’s worth. If your lucky.

Assume you can accept being shafted on that (you will be) then start asking for a discount.

As for how much, swallow you pride and go buy a copy of Motorcycle News. Yeah, I know it’s embarassing but go force yourself. See what the discounted prices are in there. Remember, they are not with trade in prices, they are straight sales.

Now your dealer will make a bit of money on your trade in so your looking for a deal close ish to the MCN prices.

Do make sure the price includes the PDI, registration and road tax and A FULL TANK OF PETROL.

If you manage all of that henceforth, you will be known as “goldenballs” or similar.

Depends on the dealer, how things are selling just now and what you’re buying.

I was lucky, I ordered an 08 model of my bike (on an 09 plate) and it was just as they were waiting to get their
new stock in.
My bike was supposed to be otr at £9500 and I got it at £7800. Mind you I didn’t even attempt to ask for any
discount on the extra’s I was buying.

Spend a few days shopping about and let them know that your looking for the best price from a number of dealers.

I’m confused - surely one can only buy a new bike from a dealer?

Second hand: buy it private. Unlike a car, it’s pretty easy to assess the state of a bike visually.

i whent to onyourbike got a xjr 08 new grate coz i paid cash that is the only reason

they will lick your ass

and the only reason you by from dealer if you got cash you got the say

Not if they have trade-ins Martin, a Suzuki dealer may well have a 1-2yr old Honda as a second-hand trade in bike, and vice verse as some people either get bored easily or just fancy a change…

I’ve not been clear, where else can one buy a new bike except from a dealer?

V ‘ard2reed som ppls ritin’

thanks for the replies guys… (& how’s the head this morning blackbird?! :hehe:)

I was actually pleasantly surprised with what they offered me for my current bike - seems like I undervalued it!

Will indeed contact a few other dealers & see what they offer as a comparison. Also scouring MCN/AutoTrader/fleaBay to get an idea of prices for trade/private sales on similar bikes…

and yes, no rush - ‘the early bird catches 2 rolling stones in the bush’ & all that…

I recon you can negotiate when buying anything worth over £1000. I do this all the time and get discounts on so many things! All you need to do is outline a few good reasons it should be cheaper.
