buying a car with no tax

after buying a motor, seen 1 but got no tax, how can i get it home apart form on the back off a recovery etc?

not gonna hand money over and then wait for me insurance form to come through then tax it etc, ideas people.

I think you will find that so long as it has a current MOT you have a couple of days “grace”. But that would need to be confirmed by the police. Why not just call your local cop shop and ask them?

that was gonna be my next step, lol. cheers.

In law you cannot drive the car without a current VEL. However, any prosecution is carried out by the DVLA and all they are after is the duty owed.

So, providing the car is insured and has an MOT, and providing you back date the tax to the start of the month, then this should not cause any problems.

There is no such thing as a few days grace btw.

Get your insurance arranged and then check www.ASKMID.com a few hours later. If it appears on the system then you can buy the tax online.
If it doesn’t appear, get the insurance company to send you the certificate via email and print it off. Carry this with you when you drive the car and make sure you don’t drive outside of office hours. That way, if you do get stopped the police can call your insurance company at the side of the road and confirm that you are insured and the only reason you’re not on the system as yet is because they haven’t updated it.

Obviously the other option is for the seller to get the tax and for you to pay them the extra when you collect the car!!

If its only just expired tax it as soon as you can and you’ll be fine.

No VEL is a civil mater… Not a police matter.

If your insurance says your vehicle must be taxed (99% do) then you technically are driving without insurance, which is a police matter.

If any cop pulls you, and you have your receipt saying you just purchased it and you can prove you’re insured, you’ll probably be ok with it… Unless they’re having a bad day or crap at their job!

Not technically correct I am afraid. No VEL is a vehicle licencing offence which is different to a civil matter

An insurance policy cannot be invalidated simply because it has no VEL unless it is specific in the wording of the policy, but even then they are still obliged in law to honour third party claims.

It is the same as if someone has no driving licence.

Policies state that the policy holder must hold or have held a driving licence, and again third party claims must be honoured.

The exception is driving whilst disqualified where it is written into the legislation that disqual drivers will not have and cannot have insurance.

So not a police matter then? :stuck_out_tongue:

Why can’t you ring up and arrange insurance before you drive away? It takes 20 minutes. You will be insuring the vehicle won’t you? So why the delay?

Make sure it has a current MOT.

Buy insurance for the day you will pick up the car. Make sure they give you the insurance details over the phone (your reference number mainly).

Then phone the DVLA, and buy the tax on the phone (giving them the insurance details you have brought and the situation - they will help you).

At least you are taxed, even though you may not be displaying the tax. You won’t show up on any APR cameras as having no tax.

Simples:D

Why not get the current owner to tax it and just give him the extra.

Thats what I did once and the seller was well happy to do it.
