Brands Hatch 6 April with Focused Events and LB's B

First and foremonst I have to say a massive massive thanks to LB member B, Focused Events’ senior instructor on the day for all his time, kind help and advice. The whole day was run perfectly by Focused, nice people who know exactly what they are doing and do it very well. Several smaller trackday companies have gone bust and having seen how these guys operate first hand I for one will just stick purely with Focused.

The day started at an utterly subhuman 7.30 am, meaning leaving home 6.30, returning home at 6.40 for my boots [*********] so, a slightly brisk blast round the south of the M25, calmed down by spotting several trackbikes on trailers on the M25 meaning I wasnt going to be the latest arriver… The briefing you have to attend is actually 8.30 am, however if you just aim to get to this, you will get last choice of pit garage, have no time to sort bits and pieces out and almost certainly find yourself 15+ miles away, sitting fuming in the 120 mile long car park known as The M25 after 8am It is painful, but well worth getting there early.

I decided not to risk lunching my shiny K5, so hired one of Focused’s fleet of Virgin R6’s which was a very pleasant surprise. The bike was obviously used, but very well looked after. Brembo Master Cylinder, perfect suspension setup and fuelling made for an excellent ride, just a shame about the rider… After 2 or 3 sessions my new mate the tyre guy spent 5 minutes checking it all over, a very impressive service. For me, I think with hindsight it was a small mistake, as I always spend time getting used to a bike before carefully and cautiously getting up to speed on it. This meant that learning the R6 and getting used to Brands [it wasnt just the bike that was a Virgin] led to a slow start, I moved down from Inters down to Beginner - a wise move - and started to have fun. Initially I was midway in the pack but ended the day pretty much equal fastest, riding round the outside of people at the McLaren/Clearways/Clarke Curve complex is something I will never ever forget.

Looking back on it, for me, I would have been better off [faster, happier] on my own bike but that is just me, I will do that from now on, but Focused’s bikes are excellent and will suit a lot of people. If you bin it there is a £495 excess and you get the old red card but that is cheaper than just 3 fairing panels for a sportsbike, so this option will suit a lot of people. I was so blown away by the whole experience that I was concentrating on getting up to speed and could not get the most out of B’s advice, but a lot did sink in and the bit about concentrating on your exit lines and drive helped me get the R6 out of Graham Hill Bend fast enough to outdrag Blades and GSXR1000’s along Cooper straight ! I will be booking some dedicated tuition time with B at a Focused Events day ASAP as it was by a country mile the most fascinating and informative time I have spent on a bike in a long while - I just cannot recomend it highly enough.

B will hopefully be around for us at the inaugural LB trackday, no doubt constantly surrounded by a throng of keen pupils, listen and learn. You will likely pick up something like a years worth of biking experience and confidence [bikings true secret ingredient] from a trackday with a bit of quality tuition. Luckily we have one of the very best amongst us here, B you are a star, a true gent and I owe you big time, cheers mate.

Here’s me, barely doing justice to a Dominos pizza bike,

Wow, what kind words, cheers Kao5. It was a pleasure to have been of such help and see riders enjoying the day and getting the most out of it. The good thing is that you didnt rush things. There was a lot for you to take in. Next time youll be able to spend more time concentrating on techniques rather than using all your concentration on an unfamiliar bike and circuit to learn.
Let me know when you want to book some tuition and with time and patience we can get you up to speed with skill and confidence, as long as you don`t burn me off down the straight on that K5.

Result, ive managed to pull some strings and will be there for the inaugural LB Trackday at Brands eve on the 15th May. I hope a few of you LBers can make it.

Ah, you lucky bugger, Kao5! Isn’t the track a brilliant thing? Good idea hiring the R6, a lot of people don’t and overlook the option, mainly on cost grounds, but it becomes a hell of a lot more economical if you happen to put it sticky-side-up. Sounds like you got some quality time with B, his experience is not to be underestimated! Nice pizza bike, hehe.

Looking forward to the first LB trackday…

Reading this has made me smile.

I’ve just registered with Londonbikers for the sole purpose of saying a big thanks to ‘B’ for all his help at Brands yesterday, and what do you know, someones already beat me to it!

Ditto everything Kao5 has said.
B is a fantastic instructor who really knows his stuff and went out of his way to help.
I’ve never learnt so much so quickly (I knew the track pretty well already and have been riding the bike for 5yrs).

So HUGE thanks to B. Cheers mate. Top man.

If anyone of you get a chance to ride on track with B, you’d be a mug not to.

Oh, and hi Jay. How you doin’?

Steve (Focused instructor… )

Warning KOA5 - its addictive, hope your bank balance is healthy!!! LOL

Thanks Steve for taking time out to join LB and the compliments and vote of confidence. It really is appreciated and makes my efforts all the more worthwhile.
I enjoy what i`m doing but am chuffed to bits with such positive and complimentary feedback.

I was not sure i could help you out at first as youre going so well in the EMRA club championship but seeing you improve further was great and rewarding for me. If i can be of any future help, just PM me. It would be good to hear how your racing is going anyway and im sure there are LB members interested too.
Best of luck with winning the championship.

Its a great bunch of people on this site, all sorts ofcolourful` people ready to joke, help or give advice. Stay in contact.
Welcome to LB.

Hey Steve! Welcome to LB! I’ve not followed your racing efforts lately, been off the SB site concentrating on LB mainly. Sounds like it’s going well, congratulations! Hope to see you at the first LB trackday if you’re booked in for it (May 15th I think).

Feel free to post up snaps and stories of your racing efforts, we’re all a bunch of track-addicts here

NO, sadly it isnt, however, my getaway riding skills have improved no end, see you on Crimewatch

Again, many thanks B, been away this weekend, still blown away by it all, back there with Focused 24/06 and will go on the LB day, but hope to make another one you are at for some serious booked instruction time.

Sorry for the late reply guys, I’ve been at Cadwell all weekend. (where I bumped into Oli H, nice too meet you mate)

Jay, the site looks ace, will have to keep coming for a look, shame I’m not more local though, looks like you all know how to enjoy yourselves.

I’d love to come on the LB trackday, but if you’ve got the date right, it’s the worst one possible! -girlfriends birthday… bummer.

Thanks fella. There’s a second one planned, Silverstone GP on June 19th. Details will be posted up in time when we’ve confirmed it. Can’t wait to get back out there, need to unleash the fury of the k5 again!
