Apparently the posh toff is already curtailing our freedoms…
Still can’t drive in my bike in the bus lanes as promised and yet already, this old school right wing, tosspot of inordinate proportions has managed to ban booze on public transport.
Apparently as of June the 1st this year, booze will be banned on public transport. That means no cans on the train on a night out, and even the posh folk on the Eurostar won’t be able to buy a miniature bottle of Chardonay or Merlot to enjoy after a hard day in the office, or whilst heading out for a romantic date to the opera. Those troublesome Tories and their restrictive regulations!
I hearby declare June 1st 2008, National Share a Can of Lager on Public Transport with Random Strangers Day…
See I can be as contrary as all you misguided Boris’ nerds!
Anybody watch “Taking Liberties” * on More4 last night?
Blair government passed 300, or was that 3,000, (doesn’t matter) new laws in 10 years. Tore up the Magna Carta and the nearest thing we had to a declaration of human rights. (Churchill, 194?)
And you’re worried about piffle?
(*Boris, bless him, was the only politician to stand up and say “This is wrong”. Mind you, he did fluff his lines.)
can’t say i’m very politically minded but ideally it would be nice to have the freedom to open a can on the way into london on the tube on a fri night.
Unfortunately some plonkers abuse it and are a manace to other travellers,
its not borises fault , it is ours. at least someone is doing something.
I had the misfortune to be on the bus last week (getting wood from B&Q that would not be practical to take on bike and don’t have a car) and three pissed chav’s climbed on too, all drinking Carling/Carlsberg/Vomit. Not pleasant at all.
Good on Boris for doing something that will make a big difference to the quality of travel for 99% of people on public transport. Drinking on public transport is not on. Having a meal on Eurostar + wine is still going to be fine as that is on a licensed basis. Do think before you rant.
I can’t say that I like the guy and he does look like an idiot but booze on public transport should have been banned when they invented public transport.
Not because I think that we should suppress personal liberty but because “people” as a all are morons that do not know when to start and English people in general cannot hold their liquor…
French love their drinking but we wouldn’t think about drinking in public transport, just not a nice place to relax and have a drink… Unless your a drunk and should join the AA that is…
Let’s ban drinking in all unlicensed public places while we are at it. That might help control underage drinking a anti social behavior attached to it…
We do not deserve liberty because as if we did we would be so quick to abuse the one we still have…
I’ve never taken alcohol on the underground before when I’m staying with a friend in Greenwich, and we’ve been on many times whilst pretty damn legless but have never felt the need to carry on drinking whilst we’re travelling. Nothing wrong with banning it from public transport at all, everyone has to share it so a few people shouldn’t be allowed to jump on sloshing cheap booze and being sick over everyone.
Not everyone’s like that obviously, I’ve never caused anyone any trouble on the trains even when I was completely wankered :Whistling: but you get a couple of idiots so sure. Won’t hurt them to wait the journey to find another pub
Good on him. I’d ban food in buses too as they did in U.S.
You can’t find a seat as they’re all spoiled with chips, burgers, ketchup and whatever else you can get from a kebab shop
Ditto to all the pro ban comments. Ive got onto the tube legless a couple of times and i generally sit on my own swaying with the train. Most other drunks ive seen on public transport are just obnoxious.
This ban doesnt stop you drinking before or after your journey, so it’s not likely to prevent drunks getting on public transport.
I am all for the new no booze on publin transport law, if you can’t go on a short tube or bus journey without feeling the need to down countless cans of lager then you have a problem, well done Borris and as for him not allowing bikes in bus lanes yet, give the guy a chance, he’s only been in the job a few days!!!
Think Tobes is trying to be satirical, but is choosing a slightly tenuous subject. Keep your powder dry fella; Boris will provide you with some gold shortly.
Has anyone noticed how unfunny Ben Eltons’ rants from Friday/Saturday Night Live are, when you listen to them today. Humour can be very contextual.
Have had several incidences with prats drinking on the tube. Personally I think that it is a very good idea. Toby I think that you need to calm down on the anti Boris ranting. Ken had his chance and blew it.
But I do agree with your ranting on Blood Donation.
Personally I haven’t had a can on the tube for maybe 20 years although I like a couple of beers on a long journey (Manc-London say) so I shouldn’t be bothered about this ban but it’s just “lowest common denominator politics” again.
Some people with cans on trains are aggressive and obnoxious. Ban everyone from having a drink on the train.
Some people are unable to control a vehicle at 60mph on a country road and unable to plan and execute an overtake properly. Cut the limit to 40mph and put double-whites down the centre of the road.
Next: some people are killed or injured riding bikes. Ban bikes?
sorry guys but removal of a freedom using the law is unlikely to stop the yobbo’s. I personally would not like to drink a beer on public transport…but can imagine why some would. I personally think it looks awful walking down the street with a can of beer in your hand but each to their own. It is the the beer that causes the trouble, its the drunken bums who cause the trouble and the beer can on the bus is nothing to do with it.
This is a pointless law…and yet another infringement on civil liberties. Dont accept it…we need more freedoms not less…
