Went to check on my bike this morning and the damned battery is flat again. 3rd time now, so looks like the battery is no longer holding it’s charge for long. The bike was used on the weekend so it’s only been unused a few days but it does have some security items hooked up, alarm etc.
Looks like I need to get one of those Optimiser thingies but should I replace the battery as well? The bike and bettery are 2 and half years old.
If it was me and I could afford it I’d change the battery and get a charger - this way you start with a clean unit and the optimate (or similar) should keep it in tip top shape so it will last longer. Just my 2 p’s worth
I’ve had an Optimate for years and it pays for itself very quickly…I always hook the bike up for a charge on a regular basis, really extends the life of the battery…(maybe worth getting this first and seeing if you can squeeze a bit longer out of your current battery…;))
yes get one they are really good. It will struggle to restore your battery if it really is badly gone and loss of charge in 2 days is not good…but it might…definitely worth trying it and getting a battery after a couple of weeks…
Mine has saved three batteries I thought were gone and failed on one that was too far gone before I tried it…
I use the optimate 111 and I have a couple of other ones I use if the optimiser wont get the battery started which sometimes it wont. I put the heavy duty ones on first and then after an hour try the optimate…and as I say three success one failure…
I did the same thing, after four years of letting my battery go flat when it wasn’t being used I killed a cell in it. I bought an optimate which unfortunately couldn’t save it but now my new battery gets plugged in all the time when I tuck the bike in of an evening. (Bedtime story, blankey, warm glass of milk. You know the drill).
we stock Optimates on our vans, they aren’t cheap but we do fit them for you there and then at no extra cost. If you want one let me know and we can make some arrangements for one of the technicians to pop round.
2 or 3 of us decided to no longer go for the almost obligatory ‘£300 for an alarm sir’ option when buying bikes this year as they drain batteries and ultimately do nothing for security. Out of all the ‘bike nicked’ posts we see I’d hazard a guess that 99% are alarmed. Best they do is wake you up just in time to see the van drive off.
most people nowadays ignore car/bike/house alarms. As for the savings from insurance…depends on who you are, your record, what you ride and where you live.
Trickle charging when not in use will definitely help however if your bike drains batteries. Sounds like your current one is knackered unfortunately so pop a new one in and keep it ridden or trickle charged
Those were the days. I soon learned not to put all my gear on before kicking it into life because if it didn’t start, I would get flippin’ hot getting it going.
I went to Infinity today and bought an optimiser (I think that’s what it’s called) so will hook the battery to it but I still need to get out on it tonight.
Anybody know an electrician? I need one to sort the electrics out in my garage
I got the Oxford Oximizer tis the nuts comes with a hard wire and clamp lead I have not had a flat battery since, I have even let the bike stand for 6 weeks with out the charger on it and the alarm on etc and it still started ok.
i got the same problem on my scooter, battery holds a charge for a day or two then it dies, having to keep re-charging it up! wich isnt good for it!
my scoot has an immobiliser on it and also an alarm thats not supposed to be working, i think its that thats draining it? never had probs before tho…probably easier to buy a new one huh! battery that is…not scoot
