Blanket Weed (in fish ponds)

Hello Darlings!

I have blanket weed try’na take hold in the puddle (not really worth calling a pond). How do we get rid of it?

mesh bags of straw!!!

Does that really work?

once the bags have been in for 10days or so yes… clear out the weed with a net first though… there are chemicals to use that work… but… depends what is in your pond… my little pond (with goldfish etc) i used chemicals… worked fine… but… i was a bit dubious about using in it in my big pond that have the big koi in… if you only have a small pond with small fish etc then use the chemical stuff… doesn’t work overnight though… it needs a fortnight… and… if you have a filter box… get some of that cotton wool/filter sheet material… the cheap stuff… dump it in your filter box on top… every day… change it every day for a week or so… that works too…

Barley stalk straw works best, but you try buying that.

Yes, the non chemical answer is the bail of hay (or part of) floated on the pond. Read an article some years back that worked out why. Got very bored.

Bottom line is, it’s cheap and it works.

Well in our pond we’ve attached this sort of blue light thing which kills the weed parts as they go through the filter. (sorry but i can’t remember what the name of it is). I’ll post that tommorrow.

I helps kill off all the big weed that grow.

We be running a Hoselock Bioforce 2200 filter:

And I have been putting in NishiKoi “Goodbye Blanket Weed”.

Oh yeah, we keep gold fish!

Make sure your UV light is working and as mention before barley straw

The blue light is a UV - it will only kill/deform particles of algae that pass through it at the correct flow rate.

To remove blanket weed in a pond you can use straw/barley or chemicals, but please try to remove a much as possible first other wise it may cause oxygen depletion as it degrades, and this may harm your fish.

Ideally you need to establish some higher plant life to out compete the algae for the nutrients in the water.
