Seems like the powers to be are determined to destroy motorcycling , i know MCN tend to go with the shock horror story’s, should we be worried ? by the looks of it if you can only buy official manufacturers accessories then there is the potential that the thousands of independent parts suppliers could go out of business overnight !
There is a link on the MCN to register a no vote but i cant seem to find anywhere to register my views .
Well that is just plain stupid, they should also do it to every old banger car that I see around hardly holding up. Bikers take a lot more care of their bikes, they check them over a lot more often than car drives… why? well because our lives are at stake if just a little think goes wrong.
So much for west civilization and being independant… with golden shackels…
The actuial proposal is to harmonise MOT testing for bikes across europe. Right now, most european countries have no MOT test for motorcycles at all. The EU consultation sets out a range of options, only one of which, as set out as an extreme example in the EU paper, is that the most severe test in Eurpe should apply in all EU countries. That is the test in Germany. So what does MAG and MCN do? They start hitting off that the EU are going to make us all comply with the German level of testing. It is highly unlikly that the rest of europe would agree to do that bearing in mind that they would need to implement that from scratch. As we have about the second most sever testing regime for bikes in europe, it is most likely that the final proposals will impose something less than we already have, but it will mean that foriegn registered bikes on UK roads arem ore likely to have brakes and lights that actually work.
You know I am pretty sure that I could take a time machine back a few years to when the EU had a consultation on changes to driving tests and I am pretty sure that I could find a post stating that it is just a consultation, we have one of the strictest testing regimes in Europe and that any implementation will likely be less then what we have already!
How many millions p!ssed up the wall to create test centers to run a test at 32mph later do we begin to admit that the EU is a big pile of crap on our doorstep that needs to seriously stop introducing bullsh!t “improvements” that do not improve a damn thing?
They will introduce this, regardless of the consultation results, it will cost us all a lot of money and it will improve absolutely nothing.
I am not quite sure how you can defend them or have a go at MCN for reporting what they want to introduce.
Have you read the actual consultation? In what way does it argue for what the MCN says it does?
BTW, the riding test is not a good example. The UK has implemented the riding test in a way that goes well beyond what the EU requires. Any problem there is a UK one and nothing to do with EU proposals.
The usual problem with EU (actually EC) Regs implemented in the UK is that the UK delegation either does not actually understand what it is signing up to, the relevant Dept does not send a knowledgable person to do the negotiating, or HMG as a whole decides that a compromise must be accepted.
I am The Government, I know all about this stuff. My own little bit of the world has an issue with another EU member state but since we now need to get Exec Director sign-off for all travel abroad, we decided not to send a rep but to get another Dept to represent us. What a bleedin waste of time. They couldn’t answer the questions posed at them, and then forgot to follow-up sending some requested info for a week.
I also have the joy of working on EU legislation now and again. That is how I know how hard it is to get other countries to increase their standards to anything like the level MCN say the EU want to.
Lets not pander to the rubbish semantics of authority.
Consultation my backside.
A consultation is when you ask people that know their opinion to garner an idea of what to do, what this is, as it is with all Government “consultations” is an exercise, they tell you what they want to do and basically illicit the responses they want.
Then they will use these responses and ignore the ones they don’t like to justify what they wanted to do in the first place.
I think it is a slap in the face to all of us to label this crap a consultation, we are just playing their game if we do that. What we should do is turn around and say this is a poll designed to give them some figures to throw about when they implement what they want.
If you go through the questions the question are there that could lead MCN to make the claims they have made…Do you favour a roadside test?..well if everyone’s answer is yes, then surely that could lead to a roadside test?
