bikers are the best

big thanks to chris and mark from kickstart (rider school over in bethnal green)

i managed my first bike school boy bike walk of shame and now know my exact range of my petrol tank

i’ve got close once on my 748 and got a bit of spluttering as a warning, no such action on the r1!

i’d passed a petrol station up on the highway but as i’d just hit the 20 mark and was under the impression (wrongly) that i had a 30 res range, i figured i’d go for the asda on the isle of dogs as i dont have to get off my bike and was only a couple of miles

had just come into the flat section of the limehouse link tunnel heading east when everything died. bugger. coasted as far as i could, and pushed the last bit over to the exit up ramp to the island. figured sod it and locked the lid onto the back of the bike, and started pushing. i’d made it most of the way up the up ramp exit road when a courier type dude jogged down the last bit of the ramp and gave the bike a push from behind too and got it out into the open. he heads off promptly and was just contemplating whether it was RACtime or whether i should get the missus on a mission when another bike pulls up. apparently he and chris had spotted me but figured i wouldnt’ have been able to push it up the ramp so it took 'em a little longer to find me!

syphened off a couple of coke cans worth (chris carried some tubing with him, i’m thinking i’m gonna start doing the same, along with making earlier stops for petrol naturally) and i’m sorted to make it to the petrol station

pair of stars, greatly appreciated

That’s a cool story! Not done it since my first bike, thankfully, but good to know there’s helpful types out there still!

Joy pump… £5 plus postage I saw exactly the same think in a petrol station in France 3 Euro… should have bought it just to post a picture

Last time I ran out of petrol it was quite lucky the petrol station was only about 10-15 minutes walk down the road so I gave the bloke (only looked about 18) a tenner and borrowed a petrol can with £5 of fuel in it. Got money back when I rode the bike in and filled it up.

i’m pretty sure the only time i’ve ever managed it was when i was given a loan car from a dodgy garage (i think they used it as a tool box) and didn’t actually give me enough petrol to make it to the petrol station. you can imagine how pleased i was, and car drivers aint as helpful!

haha, ‘joy pump’? sounds like something ducati pete would use

Never underestimate the kindness of bikers!

I went to Kickstart last year for a couple days training, found them nice peeps.

i actually got my licence with those guys as it happens

biker karma

That’s such a nice end to your story. It really is nice to know that there are nice types about.

Lucky you, bet you won’t do that again.

Didn’t follow Chris for a blast afterwards then? He’s quite the rider I hear tell…
