For those who are not on Facebook…(taken from another bike forum)
IMPORTANT
Sunday 14th March 2010
The ride will be starting at Leigh Delamere Service Station J17 (eastbound) of the M4. Please start arriving from 10:30am.
Each rider will pay £5 and receive an Afghan Heroes wristband, which will be their entry pass to RAF Lyneham. The lead riders will be leaving at 12 noon promptly. The route will be along the M4 to J16 before heading along the A-Roads towards Wootton Bassett. We will be riding through at a slow speed before continuing along to RAF Lyneham. We are honored that they are opening their gates for us and refreshments will be available.
All those attending RAF Lyneham will require to pre register giving Name, Address, DOB and Bike Registration. This is to enable security clearance to be carried out by the RAF. REGISTRATION CLOSES MONDAY 15TH FEBRUARY 2010. Anyone who does not register WILL NOT be allowed onto RAF Lyneham.
Registration will be through a secure site, this will be posted out on Monday.
We will be riding to RAF Lyneham where there will be a presentation to hand over the funds raised for the Afghan Heroes Charity, set up last September by a group of mothers who lost their sons in Afghanistan.
IF YOU KNOW OF ANY BIKERS WHO WISH TO ATTEND THE RIDE WHO HAVEN’T REGISTERED ON FACEBOOK CAN YOU ENSURE THAT THEY REGISTER ON THE SECURE SITE.
P.S. If this causes offence to anyone then I apologise, but thought some people on here may appreciate the opportunity to join the run.
No worries guys. I was worried someone might take offence to the post but I didn’t want people to miss out on the chance to go.
It may be worth organising an 0800hrs meet up at the Ace or Heston Services for an 0830hrs start. It’ll take about an hour to get to Jct 17, because we’ll all be good boys and girls and stick to the limit!
PJ, it may be worth speaking to the organisers and letting them know that you’re waiting on a new bike so might not have the reg until after the cut off date. If you get a letter from the dealer and fax it over they may give you some slack…worth a try.
Dave and I were thinking of tooling down the A4 once we get past Reading as the road is quite nice. However if there’s a few ‘L’ platers joining us we’ll use the A4 all the way so may need to leave earlier. Dave knows the roads well out this way as he has lived most of his life in Newbury so he’ll certainly know a nice route that misses out Reading!
According to the posts on the FB forum, they’re looking at sorting all this. The other mention is about the meeting point as this is on the East bound side so those of us coming from the East (West bound) will have to shoot past to the next junction if we use the M4…which is quite a trek. The organisers are speaking to the Service Station Managers and seeing if we can use their service road that goes over the M4 between the two stations. Having said all that…I’ve looked at the map and if we’re using the A4 we can go through Chippenham and take the A350 North. If we take a left off the A350 and head to Kington St Michael and along a road called ‘Honey Knob Hill’ (:w00t:) we’ll come to a split in the road. Taking the left one will take us to the Southern service station while the road on the right will take us over the M4 to the Northern station, which is where we need to be!
Obviously I’ll keep an eye on the forum and see what the arrangements are for ‘L’ plates and getting to the correct service station!
I dunno m8. They’ve made the start for those services and its all booked now.
I’ve posted about ‘L’ Plates and they’ve advised that these riders meet up with the main group at J16 just as they’re heading into Wootton Bassett. If people with ‘L’ plates are joining us, then I’d make sure some of us swapped numbers so that those of us who went on to Jct 17 could contact those at Jct 16 and let you all know we were heading over.
