Most bikes will not go into second from neutral unless the bike is moving, its like that to make finding neutral easier when you stop, otherwise you’d keep going from 1st to 2nd to 1st to 2nd etc looking for it
What old guy said… My bike was having what appeared to be a painful clunking sound when changing from first to second gear then I checked the chain adjustment and now its normal. Slightly different issue I know but no harm in giving it a once over.
Martin’s right. It’s not meant to be easy to go neutral to second, for the reasons he very clearly describes. The case where the engine’s not running is entirely different (no gear synchronization needed when nothing’s moving) and doesn’t relate at all.
I would NOT recommend forcing your poor bike from neutral into second while the engine is running. You’ll likely do damage (hence the nasty sound you report!). Why would you care to do such a thing, anyway?
clutch and chain is fine and as martin says if i walk it fwd it goes into second… still wont go when stationary…weird that ive never noticed this before though
