Bike overhaul

At some point, money permitting I want to completely strip down my GSX-R 1000 K5 and rebuild with new parts.

The basics will be to have the frame, sub frame and swing arm powder coated to replace the Halfords spec one coat minimal lacquer paint Suzuki used.

Replace all bearings and suspension linkages, and generally overhaul the suspension with a more suited spring for my weight and better quality oil.

What I’m not too clued up about is what would be worth doing in the motor.

The bike’s now on about 19,000 miles and that’s been made up from 9,000 miles since end of January so the bike has seen all conditions.

Not looking for more power, just a like new rebuild (obviously not replacing what doesn’t need to be).

Ideas?

You don’t need to touch the engine, stop being frivolous, they go for tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of miles. Just make sure the clutch and cam-chain tensioner is good, but I doubt you need to worry about this with so little miles. Same goes for valves. The K5 engine is a peach!

You’d get a better feeling by changing the chain, sprockets, cush drives, etc. Stuff that is a lot cheaper.

+1

Also by the time you’ve added up the cost of all those new bearings, seals etc. I reckon you’ll find you’ve suddenly got an awful lot less budget to spend on the motor than you think… :w00t:

+2

it may need re shiming at 25000 my k5 750 was fine untill 30000 thats is dude…

change the oil and keep the Trottle bodies balanced  and she will purrr for a long time…

sonics k4 600 must have 80000 miles plus on it…

the chassis bearings is a good idea though mate.

supsension linkage ones fail sub 20000 miles if not regreased, and london is not kind to bearings…

Thanks for the advice guys…

Jay the reason why I thought about looking at the engine now was because I’m likely to use the bike on track a lot after the work is complete and just thought better to start from a clean sheet, but you’re right about the motor on these bikes going on and on…

My clutch is no good though…It’s still doing that burr burr thing randomly when I do a hard take off from the lights…

Do you think I need an after market slipper clutch?

Yep - suspension and bearings upgrade/refresh is all good - but don’t worry about the motor bar checking the usual stuff like shims.

I really want to get a K5 gsxr thou at some point - it’s the vintage GSXR thou no?

The juddering clutch doesn’t require an upgrade. It just needs adjusting. It’s a very simple affair. I wouldn’t think about spending money on the clutch, besides worn part replacement.

I had it adjusted twice, and then after that it would happen every now and then, but not to the extent where it would affect the launch.

Yeah it’s probably the best GSX-R 1K…I think it’s a bike I’ll keep…If I don’t kill it first…Hit a pot hole today while banked over in a corner and almost had the front tuck :w00t:

I’ll adjust it next oil change…cheers

If you really want to tear the motor down, just blueprint it - you will notice the difference and it should improve reliability, especially with Suzuki’s tolerances…

no harm doing what im about to embark on, compression tests, valv clearances - CCT check - dont lose the ball bearing on the CCT!

oil / filter change, check the sparkers for dsicolour - replace blah blah blah.

mines a K1-750

Not a bad idea…I would like to get the engine to a ‘better than from factory’ state.

All depends on the costs involved though after I’ve worked on the chassis.

Yeah, all good stuff…Valve clearances are past due actually.

get yerr cams re-profiled! get it setup on a dyno!!!

You could always have some fun!http://www.bigccracing.com/shop/product.asp?idproduct=202 :w00t:
