bike chains

ok at the risk of sounding a numpty:hehe: can some one please tell me the difference

and what is best for a k8 gixxer

o ring or x ring or any of the others on the market

need a new chain and dont know if i should just get a standard replacement or try something else

A standard replacement from Suzuki will probably be endless, so you’ll have to remove the swingarm to fit it.
O ring and X ring chains are essentially the same - the O and the X just refer to the section of the seal, with an x ring offering more contact area, ergo better sealing.
Any chain from one of the major brands will be fine - DID, Regina, AFAM, Izumi, Tsubaki… there are loads.Don’t forget you’ll need sprockets too.Go for the highest quality you can afford - this is a case where you most certainly do get what you pay for.

I’ve just put a gold x-ring DID with Renthall sprockets on my 6RR - not the cheapest option but like the man says, I went for the best I could on advice. It certainly feels smooth and quiet now. I commute on it so hopefully the better quality should see me well - or at least that’s what I told the wife.:stuck_out_tongue:

Although I wouldn’t alloy rear sprockets - they don’t last 5 minutes and cost too much.

thanks guys thats help clear up a few of the grey areas i had:)

You don’t take the swing arm off to fit an endless chain. Endless refers to the fact it doesn’t have a split link.

To fit an endless chain you require a link splitter/riviter tool. available from all good m/c stores. They aint cheap though.

Errr… you would normally fit an endless chain by removing the swingarm.Yes, you can buy an endless chain, then buy a soft link, split the chain, fit it and then install the soft link but that eliminates the point of an endless chain.
The whole point of an endless chain is that you can guarantee consistency in the joining of every link.
Having said that, I have never bought an endless chain and never will - I’m quite competent with the old angle grinder and a couple of big hammers (I do have a chain tool but only use it for pressing the sideplates on - the pins never last long on a 530 chain), and I usually end up fitting 2 to 3 chains a year.

wtf 2 chains a year how many miles is that?

i got about 20000 out of my last chain and alloy rear sprocket and didnt look after it that well…
