I’m new to London and I would like to know some advice on chaining my bike.
I currently park my bike (ninja 250) roadside. I’m planning to chain the bike to a post. Unfortunately there is nowhere on my bike to put the chain through the frame. My question is there any advantage in chaining the rear wheel over no chain at all since the wheel can be removed? Also I’m looking to get an almax chain.
Any opinions/advice/etc would be very much apprepriated!
Thing to think is that it takes time to take a wheel off and then they have to move the bike with no back wheel. So the only thieves that this will not deter are professional thieves with a van. They will no doubt take out any chain or lock you could buy in a few minutes anyway.
Really, locks, chains and other security measures are little more then deterrents to kids and a way to at least slow down a professional thief long enough that someone might see them or they are put off by the thought of attempting to steal the bike in public.
You can’t think that putting a chain or disclock or alarm on your bike will stop it being stolen. It just doesn’t.
Better to have the chain round the wheel and round the post and seat if you can. Keep it off the ground if you can so its harder to cut if they have bolt croppers;)
Thanks for your information. Will order my almax tomorrow!
Also how does chaining two bikes together compare with one bike chaining to a post for a deterrent? Is there a high risk of thiefs just lifting both bikes together? Unheard of?
The police at Bikesafe recommended chaining bike to bike because it makes it more difficult to lift. Lifting one bike is hard enough but for two chained together you’d need 4 guys possibly.
They say putting the chain through the frame is best but that is not possible on many bikes. The back wheel is a good idea. If they remove it and leave the wheel behind then unless they intend to strip the bike down for parts then they have a bike which is missing a wheel and that isn’t much good to anyone. You could argue that they could source a replacement wheel from a breaker but that requires hassle. If they were into hassle and work then they wouldn’t be in the crime game.
