Beware while riding in Central London !!

Well I find that if you stick in first gear to keep the revs up, its louder (and you can hear the difference cos when your filtering the noise is funnelled by the other vehicles) and it gives you much better engine breaking so as soon as you roll off you imediately slow down.

blip the throttle regularly also. a changing noise is much more noticable than a constant noise.

Filter!!! You dont know how. Saw you on Sunday morning sat in traffic you big girl!!

This has kind of diverged to a discussion on filtering and I realise there aren’t many jay-walkers on motorways, but my question is to those of you who regularly nip in and out on motorways when the traffic is quite happily progressing at 60mph or so. I have often seen a bike whizz past my wing mirror when I’m doing close to 70, albeit behind a stream of traffic that’s also doing 70ish.

I know I’m just a learner in real terms, but I can’t quite see why people do that? Surely at that speed the benefit of doing 80 when everyone else is doing 65 is not such a win compared to the danger of doing so?

If you have a bit of a problem when filtering at 15 when everyone else is stopped, you won’t be quite as likely to do yourself or your bike serious damage as when speeds are 65/80.

I was told by my instructors that you should only filter if traffic is stopped or not moving much more than walking pace, and then only do 10-15 mph faster than the rest.

Have I missed something?

And before anyone leaps down my throat at this, it’s a genuine question from an inexperienced rider who’d be too bleedin’ scared to nip in and out on a motorway at that kind of speed! (Oh, and I ride a cruiser too, so 80 is really pushing it.)

“Have I missed something?”…yes they are called “Brain Dead”. I see a person on a Gixxer on the 25 the same time every morning just after 6’ish. The traffic is moving in the region of 80 and this twat weaves in and out at around 90 odd. A statistic waiting to happen…
