Bloke I used to work with has offered me his 600 Bandit which he had an accident on a couple of years ago, he said the only thing it needs is a new engine cover as it cracked and the oil leaked out (right hand side cover). Its been sat for 2 years so no mot or tax, must have over 30k miles on it aswell.
He wants £500 for, it - is it worth that do you reckon by the time I’ve got it fixed, serviced, road worthy, tax’d & MOT’d etc?
You reckon ?..i bought a good running bandit engine for £50 recently and carbs for thirty ,main items to check apart from the engine imo are disks, pitted fork legs , exhaust and tyres as their condition will determine whether its viable or not you could quite easily end up spending another £500. or more .
on the other hand it may be a good buy but you gotta know exactly what you’re getting for your money .
Also i know he’s a mate but don’t blindly believe the ’ all it needs is…’ line , its been in an accident so potentially it could have all sorts wrong with it .
Did your mate say it was running on its side for a while ? Might have damaged the engine if it had and you’d not find out until you’ve bought a new cover and filled it with oil. Probably also needs a new battery and tyres.
Looking on Autotrader there are MoT’d and taxed Bandit 600’s for £1200.
He didnt say - he got knocked off by a van around 15mph and the bike landed on top of him. He said he just wants to get rid of it from his shed & I can pay him later but if I change the engine cover and fill it with oil and it sounds knackered then I think he’ll understand that I wouldnt wanna pay for it, I’m going to look at it next weekend and if it looks ok I’ll offer him £400 for it I think.
i got a bandit 600 Y reg (2001) and it is a nice bike. I took a tumble on it (with special thanks to London Buses) but it is like a bloomin’ tank. I got it from the father in law who also come off it a few times (so ideal first bike for me really). It had minimal damage when i got it as he looked after it and stroked it back into good health. Since i was hit by the bus i repaired everything out of my own pocket (the case with the bus company is on going 5 months later! so no pay out yet!) and it didn’t cost too much. parts are cheap including new so i would say the bike itself is great but you need to check everything over. Is the engine case cracked or scratched?, brake levers intact? brake resouviour ok and no damage? there are so many small things to look over before you say yes to buying the bike!
Cheers - he did say the engine cover is cracked & the oil’s leaked out but I know for a fact that if a bikes hit the road its going to have broken more than an engine cover but I’ll check it all over and offer him a price, by the time I’ve fixed what needs doing, serviced it, sorted the seized brakes, MOT’d & Tax’d I could probably by a bike that doesnt need any work.
TBH, it may not have done much damage - my gixxer 750 was written off after a bike / car interface, but that was purely down to the plastics. One of the engine covers was holed and it lost it’s oil, but it ran like a dream once I’d put a new cover on and refilled with oil.Nothing else on the motor was damaged (and when it went under the car it ripped one of the front wheels off)
wot you have got to think about is not really the damamge but how much oil came out and has it been sitting all that time with none of feck all oil in which is not too good.
I picked this bike up last weekend & need a right hand engine case cover for it - anyone know where I can pick up a 2nd hand standard one? Dont want 1 of the bling polished £45 ebay jobs really.
As far as I can see theres nothing wrong with it, no bent levers or dents - just needed a new mirror, engine case cover & obviously some oil - as its been standing for 2 years with no oil, is there anything I could do to get the oil around the engine before firing it up?
Sounds like you might have got a bargain then.
Just ring round the breakers for the engine cover and check out fleabay.
If you fill the oil back up and have a fully charged battery and fresh fuel when you fire it up, it won’t take long at all for the new oil to be pumped straight round to where its needed.
