Went out for a nice ride today and it felt like the back wheel kept sliding out - it happened while I was braking (not even harsh braking) and even riding along a straight road. The only thing I did today was put air in it… does that effect it?
The last week Jackie and I have found the roads round London to be very slippery. Today I was checking the air and found both bikes had tons of black greasy stuff all over the rear wheel, including the tyre surface. It was very oily and I made sure all the lubricants etc were where they should be, in the bikes, so can only assume it is a build up of salt, diesel, dust, mushed up leaves and whatever that has collected over the last two weeks since I gave the bikes a check over. A good spray down with degreasant and a wash off seems to have removed it and hopefully the roads will feel better tomorrow.
Check that you haven’t picked up a nail and got yerself a slow puncture - voice of experience from today.
Have you got a tyre pressure gauge? (about a fiver from Halfords, size of a keyring). The air pumps at garages can be a little dodgy for giving the right reading and both too much and too little can make the back end feel a bit less stable than normal.
The cold/frost increases the amount of resin that comes out of the tyre - just do a (relativly) small burnout - or properly warm up the tyre’s before you venture out!!!
