axle nuts on cars

bought great big wrench handle, and still cant get the fecking thing off, despite jumping on it till the car nearly bounced of the axle stands, anyone got any ideas?

U sure it not opposite thread as some are on some threads on cars etc.

Other than that spray it with wd and leave it for a bit.

Heat helps some times too.

steve make sure your not doing them up

alternively get a bar over the handle to make it longer. loosen the nuts off first then jack it up…

and if your stiill having probs go down a trye place and bung em a drink to spin em off with a gun then re tighten yourself go home then take em off

axle nuts what are u taking off??? i thought you meant wheel nuts

checkd it out, and the thread does go anti clockwise (normal)

Well, im trying to adjust the handbrake, but in order to do that i need to adjust the rear drums aswell

got a big socket bit (30mm) and big handle.

Sprayed wd40 on it, might try again in a bit, but now im just thinking maybe i should just geta garage to do it, really irritating me though,

had thought bought sticking a bar over end, but it has labels on it not too, and i suppose the pressure id need to put on it, sticking a bar over the top would just slip

You sure you need to undo those huge nuts. Drum brakes I have had on cars have always had adjusters on the backs of the drums.

this is what i thought, or usually some screw or something on the drum cover to take it off, but it says in the haynes manual you gota undo the axle nut itself

What car is it then? Very very strange not to have an easy adjuster.

its a 99 clio, i know froggy cars can be a bit quirky, but im thinking theres gota be an easier way

steve there is normally a little notch on the nut that needs knocking out it stops the nut coming undone on its own you will never get it off with out tapping it out with a hammer and screw driver should be right on the top of the nut as you look at it, if u clean all the gunk off it should be visible make sur the hand brake is off when trying to remove the drums but they will still be a fucker too

cheers matey, ill have a look at it, but would it not have mentioned that in the haynes manual? There was a cap over it to protect it, so theres no gunk can actually get near the nut itself, and didnt see anything.

fecking thing, would be allot less hassle to just let a garage do it, but like i said im determined now!

you doh-nut take the cap off or you will never get it off then u will see the notch or a split pin…

Ive got a foot long scaffold pole you can borrow.

of course i took the cap off, howd u think i know how tight the nut was?

it really shouldnt be that tight as it holds the bearing in place if its too tight it would fuck the bearing, you should be able to adjust it behind the hand brake by a 10mm nut or underneath where the cable splits each side

COMPUTER SAYS WHACK NUT FIRST WITH HAMMER THEN TRY…____

So hold on a sec you’re saying you need to take the hub nut off to adjust the handbrake? you sure about that?

Normally theres an inspection hole and a square pegged adjuster on the brake plate, the rear of the drum.

I think you might be missinterpreting the good book a bit there.

he is irish…

Unusual that a late car doesn’t have self adjusting handbrake tbh. Can’t remember the last car I had where the handbrake had to be adjusted manually, but then again it is french. Pet hate of mine french cars but thats another story…
