Attempted theft / urgently need advice on buying chain-disclock ASAP

Hi all,

just noticed someone had a good look at my “chain” . the most amazing thing is that I was at the library all night and only got back at about 4.30 am. then I was home until this afternoon, 4.30 pm when I noticed this.

basically somebody bent it until the link popped, revealing a truly laughably small inner cable. damn i can’t believe i was dumb enough to buy and use that since august.

I am concerned these people, having checked out the terrain, will come back to get it, possibly tonight.

this is a 14 yr old fazer i thought it would be of little interest to anyone but obviously not.

specially Finsbury Park seems to be hot right now (tenere+gs stolen earlier in the week as noted in a post)

so, question is… disc lock or almax? atm i’m thinking almax, altho both would obv be better…

mainly: where can I get an almax tonight?

do I have to order it online or are there places I cann turn up + buy one? anywhere that will be open late?

is the price difference really big? also, is a disclock worth buying the same price as a chain worth buying (~£150?)

the almax website has either the III for £160 for 1.5 meters with lock, or the IV with lock 1 meters for £150.

i just checked the length of my thing, it’s 1.3 metres and shorter than I would have liked, so i guess its gotta be 1.5m…

anybody know if this will fit under the 98 fazer seat?

i know im being a bit lazy here but i got so much stuff 2 do for uni for monday, i really didn’t need this right now!

what dyou reckon the best scenario is?

try get a disclock tonight while ordering an almax to save money?

pleaase please reply if you got any partial response to any question or any advice.

thank you so much for your time!

ps - check that picture quality out, gotta love my phone - N8.

You can’t get an Almax in a shop - from them direct only. I’d also phone them tomorrow rather than buying online since it’s a one man operation - he won’t necessarily post it straight away if you order online (as AndyCR15 experienced and noted on here)

A disk lock only stops an opportunist from pushing it away … and if someone has already had a go and you fear they are coming back with better intent tonight … that’d suggest they might bring a van … and just pick it up and stick it in … hence disk lock not much use.

I’d look at parking it somewhere else … at a friend’s house who doesn’t live in the area …

eesh. I dont think you can buy an Almax retail anywhere. Someone was selling one on here recently, might be worth hunting that down? They are also really busy, so might not be able to get you one out next day either…

More security is better IMO its an 8 yr old fzr so as long as its not easy to take they should be deterred simply enough I would guess? So a chunky disk lock should help if you can get one pronto.

There are other options for chain next day, but go for 19mm or at least 16mm chain to foil most hand croppers. The chain will most probably not fit under your seat however.

Don’t bother with an Almax - your bike isn’t worth enought to warrant such an expensive purchase. Just get a nice beefy lock and chain from screw fix or b and q.

Chain much better than disk lock as you can chain the bike to something else…

Firstly thanks Very much for answering!!!

yeah I was wondering why the most famous chain brand had such a crappy video/website, 1 man operation explains alot!

if i hadn’t heard from anyone about them, and just landed on their website, i wouldn’t even think of paying them 150 quid!!!

a friend who doesn’t live in the area, I mean that makes sense in a way… but in another way:

1 - i would have to take PT back - im already mad enough some sh*t wants my bike, that would be 2 horrific events in 1 day I couldn’t deal with, might just go postal, especially as I am truly allergic to adverts, Pt has so many, I really LOATHE adverts, I might just go nuts on some poor old lady.
2 - my lock is already revealing the tiny cable inside, so that’s not good… unless I can get something new tonight…

i’m gonna have a look see if I can find anything on here, thanks for the tip I will get at least 16mm ,

yeah thats what I thought it’s so pricey, it’s like buying one for life!

on the subject of chaining:

Is it better to chain the front or back wheel ?
or is there like another option which is even better, say, i dno, through the forks?

ok so now I’m gonna see if B&Q or screwfix open late tonight… somehow I doubt this…

anybody know how I can make the 3 quotes in one work ?

A 16mm (or bigger) diameter chain means the theif is going to have to resort to an angle grinder or something equally noisy & inconvenient to remove it. having said that, it’s only worth getting that size & cost of chain if you’re going to attach it to something solid.

Squire do a 16mm chain called an ex-caliber which is probably about the same as the almax series 3 but slightly cheaper and you may find it locally tomorrow. You definitely won’t fit a 16mm diameter 1.5m chain under your seat, mine’s a bit of a squeeze in a 10 litre tailpack and it’s a heavy lump.

Chances are you won’t get a decent chain tonight - you might get a cheap disc lock/u-lock from a big Tesco or DIY store - got to be better than nothing. Like someone said, park the bike somewhere else if you’re worried they’ll come back for it.

Public transport is inconvenient - but not as much as going through insurance shite while you wait for a payout after a theft … then having to find a new bike …

And it shouldn’t matter too much that your current chain is damaged if it is parked somewhere else … only a problem if someone comes to nick it … you think someone will come back if you leave it where it is … you’d have to be really unlucky if a different set of theives were out and about in a different area and out on the rob …

Do the right thing … move it out of the way … get a decent chain (Almax or otherwise) … then bring it back home

Your welcome to leave it outside mine (in the front garden) and daisy chain it. I’m not too far from you. 5-10mins by bike and 15mins by transport. My mate has my spare lock so I don’t have one to lend you.

Just a thought, is there a police station or something nearby that you could park outside of? Maybe a fire station - anywhere that’s likely to have people milling around late at night.

If nothing else, it might set your mind at ease, especially if you have an alarm or get an alarmed disc lock.

Tesco direct sell these and are often open late or 24 hours. Probably as good as you’ll do at 9pm on a wet wednesday - http://www.tesco.com/direct/am-tech-heavy-duty-disc-lock-with-alarm/215-3350.prd?skuId=215-3350&pageLevel=

hmmmm so this seems to be the conclusion:

chain for chaining it to something, disclock for when there is nothing to chain it to.

outside my house there is nothing, just a very small tree (sort of big coke bottle diameter)

thus I dont chain it to anything, as my chain doesnt even reach round it from the road, just lock it… and they still looked at it, probs knowing it was not very solid.

there are no b&q around apparently, only mini warehouse for reserve & collect. however 2 screwfixes within a couple miles, but closed now…

yeah I guess im not gonna get anything worthwhile tonight, so should just move it…

HOWEVER,

i am so lucky that I have an extra, possibly bigger problem.

tank is peeling off my paint, i can see rust, i have no idea how bad it is, but i know theres a whole lot in the tank swirling around, so probably between very bad and too bad to repair but as its my first bike i cant judge.

im suffering bigass fuel starvation, when it kicks in it even changes the sound of the engine, as if the cylinders arent synced right.

ANYWAY; I noticed a fuel leak a few months back, took it to OMC, cleaned out the air vent hose and it stopped leaking…

now it’s come back with a bang, onticed couple days ago, leaking worse than before, meaning I need to sort this leak out, find out if i need a new one or not.

in the meantime I’m only riding the bare minimum, no pleasure riding, since if i open up its starved and could possibly die on me again at any time, and obviouslly I dont want the engine to get hot to reduce explosion risks.

also thinking of the fact (metnioned in the sitting straddling thread) that if my tank is rusty, and it catches fire, the last thing to do is jump off the bike, it will probs crack and I may wish I was dead. so if it catches fire, i have to calmly put the side stand down, and then run. i guess?

so basically i think I’m gonna take it to the only place I can think of. I don’t wanna say here because those C*TS may be watching these forums.

i’m not liking the publicness of this at all actually when i think of it, police, thieves, either way… i dnt really want people to know what bike i have, where I live, esp. not where I’m gonna put my vulnerable bike tonight lol.

man I feel lik,e john travolta: YOU DONT F*CK WITH A MAN’s (AUTOMOBILE) MOTORCYCLE, WHO DOES THAT? it would have been worth it him doing it just so i could catch him do it.

only got third-party cover, im cheap like that :S actually after losing my car after a write-off with just third-party, I dont wanna go through that with my bike, that would depress the hell out of me. but my insurance situation is little complicated but dont wanna spill the details here.

sound advice, moving has to happen. thx all for helping in the decision making process!

was busy typing so didnt see your reply, haha the daisy chain got me chuckling.

if the offer is serious then im still considering it, peoples contributions are still coming in, no fixed decisions yet…

now I’m gonna investigate if I can get one of those AM disc locks tonight, try to see where the nearest 24hour big enough tesco is, I have a bad feeling though.

if I could get that then I could investigate where the nearest police station is. although to be fair If i got that I would probs leave it in front of my house, as i’m gonna be up most of the night anyway, and wait for it to go off… if it doesnt go off and i find the bike gone, i will cry.

Yeah offer is there anytime. I’ve got no plans to go out and my bike has an alarm so if its daisy chained so does yours in theory.

oh yeah and just to reiterate:

whats better, chaining front or back wheel? or through forks?

An Oxford Stormex Cover over the top which has locking loops makes the whole bike much more of a ball ache to steal if you lock it down front and rear. Those are only £60.

errrrr, haha i think i misunderstood.

daisy chained i thought you were making a joke, as in since you dont have a lock to lend me, and its gonna be in your front garden, i could make a chain out of daisies

obbbbviously not what you meant!

you meant chaining 'em together!

Oxford Rainex is even better for around £35-40 (not better quality, just better price) - I used that all the time disclock on the front, chain on the rear

Daisy chain is when you chain bikes up together. Makes them harder to nick.

Also, I’d agree that a cover helps as people can’t see whats under the cover. Out of sight out of mind.
