Anyone recommend a Hotel / Restuarant / Places of interest in Venice ?

Off to Venice for a couple nights in November as a cheap weekend away. Another stop on the European tour of tacky tourist attractions

Can anyone recommend any places to stay? Or even anywhere to visit that might not be on the usual beaten track? Any good (read cheap) restuarants, bars etc?
We’re flying into Treviso Airport which I’m told is a traint trip into the heart of Venice. It would be nice to stay fairly local to the best bits, and luxury isn’t a must as we’ll spend most of our time outside.

Thanks
Stu

Nope never been

But you lucky bugger.

lol, well it was rude not at £60 for return flights for the two of us. Just means flying with Ryanair

I went there when I was a kid … so, can’t remember anywhere to recommend, but I’m sure you’re gonna love it! Enjoy!

Too jealous to think straight, soz !!!

But I’d suggest at least first floor, unless you like water-beds.

Hummm not been there yet, sounds nice though.

Might be a good idea to take arm bands

O by the way got the seat unit today, thanks mate

Imagine that St Marks sqaure is the most expensive place in the world - £5 for a cup of coffee 15 years ago!!!

The further you go from the centre, the cheaper it gets - look for where the Italians are dining - small narrow streets etc.

VERY beautiful city - lucky devil!!

I went there as a kid too, so don’t remember it. The misses has never been and has always wanted to, we just try to get 3 or 4 city breaks each year to see the world a bit more. So many nice places close to home.

Heard horror stories of St. Marks square so won’t be eating or drinking there, but the Gondola ride is a must.

She’s in for a shocker next year, my plan is eastern europe! Poland, auschwitz, Russia, Ukraine etc. All the sun spots of the world

me and my missus went to venice a couple of years back, i think it was october time and i remember it being a bit cool in the evenings, we stayed just off the main grand canal in a sh**y little hotel called ‘canal&water’, give that a wide berth if you can.

When in venice you have to to do all the sight’s like the st marks square, the campanille tower, and the basicalli which are pretty much slapbang in the middle next to each other, we also took a gondola ride, and you really have to haggle, just try walking away when they give you a price and watch the price come down!

Now the gondala ride it’s self was pretty interesting as the guy took us around the back canals under the bridge of sighs, and then OUT onto the main lagoon where you have every type of boat, ship, floating vessel and you hit the wake and your gondola might as well be caught up in a white water trip as its moving in every direction possible at once!

But on a whole i really liked venice the best way to get around is to get a waterbus ticket and they travel up and down the Grand canal, just be quick when you get on and off them!

I’ve been there…six times?

You have to visit the restaurant “La Grotto”, it looks inside like a cave, the food is rubbish but the sight is cool.

And another thing is, Venice is much more impressive during the carnival. Thousands of people dressed up, concerts and things like that.

lol, cheers Rottie might give that a go.

How easy is it to get around, without getting stung for expensive taxi boats?

Last weekend, the Indie had 48 hours in Venice. If you’ll PM me your address, I’ll photocopy it for you. Covers you from arriving, where to stay, where to eat, what to see, what to buy, etc. Alternatively, give the Indie a call and ask if they have any spare Travel sections for 15 October. They have before sent replacements for free.

You wouldn’t be using the taxi service but ordinary vaporetti, same as all the Venetians. Tickets cost five euros (about £3.50) and are valid for 90minutes. You may be able to get tourist passes for 2-3 days covering transport and/or museums. Try the Italian tourist office website: http://www.enit.it/default.asp?Lang=UK

Paivi, Nice one thank you. Just looked on the Indies website and the article is there so I’ll print it off and have a read.

I had a quick look at the Tourist Board site the other day, but a lot of it isnt up to date. I’ve got a Lonely Planet guide on its way to me as well, we’ll make it up as we go along as always

Just remembered I’ve got an Eyewitness guide to Venice & the Veneto. I love these guides, with loads of pictures, so you know what the building you’re looking for looks like, as well as suggested walking routes to make sure you catch all the major sights.

If you promise to get it back to me in one piece, I can let you borrow it…

i wouldnt get a water taxi as they charge you for your luggage as well, just get the boat bus thing, as it costs peanuts

Cheers all, all points taken onboard

Paivi, I’ve got a Lonely Planet guide so I should be alright. Dont trust myself with other people property Thanks for the offer though, much appreciated. That Indie article is quite good.
