Anyone here know about bodywork filler

I’m hoping you lot have some experience with crash repairs :Whistling:

After my recent excursion into the gravel at Brands Hatch, I now have some ‘spare’ fairings for my R1. Every cloud has a silver lining however since now I have something I can use to practice bodywork repair and respray on…Yay!

I should make it clear that despite my presence here, Terry (both of you), I’m not gonna fighter it!

Must say though, it is fightered at the moment and looks damn sexy without its clothes on.

Right enough useless waffle…

Questions…

I’m using a plastic repair kit called Plastex to mend the cracks and splits in the fairing. It works like a bond, but is not brittle like say superglue adhesive so it doesn’t break.

My idea was to use that to create an underlying structural repair, and then use filler over the top to get the bodywork looking back as normal.

Will this work do you think?

When sanding down filler, can I use my portable Dremel on a low speed setting or shall I just use wet/dry paper?

And finally…

Is there a difference in quality of filler usually and where can I get some locally to me (in south London).

Cheers guys.

Appreciate any help

Sorry Afro I aint got time to reply  got to go to the mot place or I wont be going france 2mora…but I’ll be on here over weekend :P;)

The plastex is great stuff…but it has let go a little on a repair I did. It is very close to the fairing tab though and was expected.

I wouldn’t use a dremmel on the filler, too small. Best not to put too much filler on and then sand down by hand with finer grades of wet’n’dry paper…

Cheers Adzski…

Can you explain more what you mean about the Dremel being too small? The repairs are pretty small cracks.

Cheers.

Are these just going to be track fairings? If so i wouldn’t worry about making them to pretty, just repair the crack with either that plastex or just fibreglass or even soldering iron and cable ties, spray them matt black and jobs a good un.

Track and road spare so want it to look as good as my experience allows.

matt black it is then

joking aside. Iwouldn’t try and make them to pretty mate, do what needs doing to strengthen them and then get some halfords cans and go mad.

I would have used a fibre glass kit, they are quite stronger, and filler the cavity.

Wet and dry is always best for a more even repair. The dremmel can be a bit harsh.

But you got a chance here to get a killer paint job, if you really wanna?

Afro I go along with the cable tie’s mate, if you drill some holes either side of the break to run the cables through it’ll be as good as new. And they do some luverly colours to match your bike…and it aint like it will be in one piece for long, unless your taking up RWYB ;):P:)

Are all fillers alike or do I have to buy something particular for this job?

Cheers mate.

:D:D:D:D Ya Bustid

They are all usually pretty good if your gonna paint it up. Just make sure you get the right mix of hardner or it will all crumble away.

Finally got some time to start working on this…Still getting used to fixing the snapped off bits so it’s looking rough.

Er, think I’ll need a lot more wet and dry paper

The Plastex seems to be doing the trick and I like the fact that it’s malleable with your fingers so you can shape it to form the missing parts.

Got to run the bike with the fairing like this until my replacement comes from the US. It will be a good test to see how strong it is though.

Then I’ll be sanding and priming…Until next time
